Ever onwards! Thanks Terry Stanley for highlighting the potential impacts of rescheduling for ADWEEK. Sky-high to see CMC Co-founder Joyce Cenali and CMC Members Embarc, Happy Days, and CMC Media Partner Surfside blazing the way forward. "Such a change could have a profound effect on marketing in the sector, industry veterans say, with more publishers and platforms welcoming weed ads. The Cannabis Media Council, a trade organization, thinks rescheduling will “open up more mainstream direct-to-consumer channels” that have previously restricted or refused weed money, per co-founder Joyce Cenali. Under rescheduling, cannabis companies themselves would be freed from a tax burden, the onerous 280E, that has not allowed them to write off everyday business expenses. (For the first time, for instance, canna brands will be able to deduct rent, salaries, insurance and marketing costs). Cannatech firm Surfside predicts “a 35% to 80% increase in advertising investments” in a post-280E world. Brands and retailers are already calculating the difference between then and now, planning to amp up their paid media. “The removal of 280E would increase our net revenue after taxes by about 25%,” per Paul Lepore, president of Happy Days dispensary on Long Island, N.Y. “This higher net revenue number, commingled with the ability to write off marketing expenses, would be enough persuasion to increase our marketing budget by about 200%.” Rescheduling could “open seven to eight figures in annual impact,” according to Courtney Zalewski, chief brand officer and CMO at California-based dispensary chain Embarc. “We don’t know yet if this will open traditional channels and ease advertising restrictions, or how creative and marketing departments grow as a result,” Zalewski told ADWEEK. “Our hope is that it will allow a new level of maturity and sophistication we have yet to see in cannabis marketing.” https://lnkd.in/evxYzYMu

AdFraud is especially concerning for multicultural publishers and firms because they have less institutional support giving them leverage in these bad deals. While regulators look to address privacy concerns, some of the most impactful side-effects of AdTech structures are going unaddressed, leaving millions of ad dollars wasted and both advertisers and consumers getting the worst end of the deal. #AdTech #AdFraud

While I can’t speak to the legitimacy of the accusations herein, this is still a worrying situation for advertisers everywhere. Publications whose reputations are staked on their image of legitimate business are not what many may expect to be perpetrators of MFA Ad fraud. That being said, we can better understand ad fraud by looking at the incentive changes on the supply side of these AdTech deals. Ad fraud particularly harms multicultural publishers, as their reach and impact receive decreased impact when improperly assigned to Ad spaces. #AdFraud #AdTech #ProgramaticSupplyChain

I’m excited to share the findings from a recent collaborative study with YouGov, which delves into the effectiveness of product placement strategies in media. BENlabs & YouGov’s research was aimed at determining whether a "standout" integration strategy—characterized by bigger, fewer moments—is more impactful than a "standard" product placement strategy, involving a scaled campaign with multiple "average" moments. Our findings found the average standout product placement generated a Net Placement Value (NPV) of $412,400, compared to $299,803 for a single standard one, though various combinations (2 standard vs 1 standout, 4 standard vs 2 standout) lead to varying results. So what was the key takeaway? The study reveals that there isn't a one-size-fits-all answer to a brand's product placement strategy. While standout and standard placements both show significant benefits, the choice between them should align with a brand's overall marketing strategy, risk tolerance, and capacity to support a standout placement with additional marketing activities. Both scaled campaigns and significant moments in tentpole content hold their unique advantages. Brands are encouraged to consider how these strategies align with their marketing goals to maximize impact. Ad fraud on MFA sites continues to be a widespread problem, and the fallout from many of the recent discoveries in the space is bringing this to the attention of advertisers everywhere. While this may inspire some firms to cut back on advertising or switch to other ad channels like OOH, it also serves as an opportunity for growing ad tech businesses that have built-in accountability measures that can restore trust. #AdTech #AdFraud
