“Diego Sanchez was the secret ingredient in the recipe that took my product line at Microsoft to the next level. The mission was simple, but not so easy: turn our competitors into partners. Diego deftly helped to craft and execute a tactical plan to draw major rivals into an alliance with Microsoft. Through his insightfulness, engagement, and tenacity, he directly contributed to the program's success. Bottom line, Diego gets it done.”

You're facing diverse work styles in your virtual team. How can you avoid conflicts and foster collaboration?
Some of my team members are good with synchronous communication like phone calls, video conferences, and live meetings. Others are better with asynchronous communication like chat and email. The talented synchronous communicators tend to thrive in sales, marketing and business management positions. When I think about areas of improvement for this group, I coach towards slowing down, being thoughtful, essentially looking before they leap. My asynchronous communicators seem better suited to product development, engineering, and operational roles. This group needs to be pushed to follow the 80/20 rule and to have a bias for action. Cross-functional teams would be well served by having both communication styles represented.

Here's how you can develop the essential skills to drive change within an organization.
I find simplicity compelling. Our vision at HousingWire is to become the Bloomberg of Housing. We want to marry news, data, analysis, and research to be the media and information services hub that housing professionals plan their day around. When your vision is simple and compelling, it's fairly straightforward to rally the company around it. Our annual goals, quarterly rocks, weekly 1:1s, and daily tasks flow directly from the vision.

Here's how you can overcome challenges in virtual collaboration and lead effectively.
At HousingWire, our leadership team uses a quarterly rocks system supplemented by weekly one on ones. The rocks are the big picture goals for the quarter, while the weekly one on ones provide regular accountability as every leader pushes towards achieving their rocks. All of the rocks contribute to our overall company goals, which are simple and don't change much from year to year. We want to grow direct sales revenue and grow our paid audience. Every leader at HousingWire asks themselves on a daily basis, am I working on projects and tasks that are helping me achieve my rocks, and ultimately help achieve our company goals? If the answer is no, they have an immediate opportunity to course correct.

Here's how you can overcome challenges in virtual collaboration and lead effectively.
There's no magical way to build trust. Trust is about being consistent day after day, week after week, month after month, and year after year. Do you deliver what you say you're going to deliver on? Do you remove the obstacles that you commit to removing? Do you truly listen to your team?
