Disruptive Competencies for a Cognitive Internet of Things World
The proliferation of connected devices and related emerging technologies is enabling disruption across industries. From industrial products to insurance, industries are facing disruption from all angles—driven by the race to stay market relevant, to differentiate, and to assimilate consumer data. As technology changes industries, it’s also disrupting operations and jobs. 65% of children now in primary school will work in job types that don’t exist today, and there may be less of them, with…
The proliferation of connected devices and related emerging technologies is enabling disruption across industries. From industrial products to insurance, industries are facing disruption from all angles—driven by the race to stay market relevant, to differentiate, and to assimilate consumer data. As technology changes industries, it’s also disrupting operations and jobs. 65% of children now in primary school will work in job types that don’t exist today, and there may be less of them, with every 3 of 10 jobs expected to be done by software, robots, and smart machines by 2025.1 There is an intense demand for new competencies—a set of capabilities that represent organizational strategic values which influence decisions and actions across the enterprise.
The competencies required in this new world are differentiated from the past and need to be acquired and nurtured. Today, companies have not fully invested in establishing an environment that fosters and promotes these new competencies. By prioritizing these new competencies, companies will transform themselves and become disruptive.Other authors -
Leveraging wearables and the Internet of Things to disrupt, transform, and unlock value
Across industries, wearable technologies are transforming enterprise performance and enabling innovative business models. As part of the Cognitive Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystem, and augmented by other Industry 4.0 technologies, these body-worn technologies provide up to four core applications to businesses: real-time monitoring, remote collaboration, personalized perspective, and enhanced ability.

As part of the Cognitive Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystem, and augmented by other Industry 4.0 technologies, these body-worn technologies provide up to four core applications to businesses: real-time monitoring, remote collaboration, personalized perspective, and enhanced ability.
Wearables transform enterprises by increasing efficiency, safety, quality, and collaboration; improving productivity; and reducing costs. As the technology and its adoption evolve, head-mounted displays, body-worn sensors, and exoskeletons will improve employee safety and productivity; and retinal devices and adjustable clothing will enhance employee and user experience.
Combined with the power of IoT, wearables will disrupt traditional business models, help drive the data economy, and offer new value and insights to enterprises. Changes in differentiated services and revenue models will include shifting from B2B to B2B2C and as-a-service, while offering dynamic demand distribution opportunities. As wearables integrate into control centers in IoT enterprises, they will guide new, efficient business processes, and revenue generating and cost saving monetization opportunities.
Wearable technology is already on the agenda of business leaders for its transformational potential—and it’s imperative that your business invests in wearables to stay competitive in the market. As you begin your wearables journey, IBM’s cross-industry experts can partner with you to develop and maximize your IoT strategies and operations with wearables.

Adaptive robots are game changers, and are thus, increasingly demanded by enterprises around the world. They are instrumented, interconnected, and intelligent machines that can collect IoT data and autonomously make decisions . Adaptive robots are transforming the way humans interact with and benefit from technology and the way businesses work.
How are businesses across industries benefiting from adaptive robots and IoT?
Adaptive robots are helping companies create new personalized products and services, improve operations, reducecosts, andelevateefficiency. CoupledwiththegreaterIoTecosystem, adaptiverobots can learn from other connected devices to cyclically improve their actions. Banks can offer customized robotic teller services, while employees at an automotive company can work side by side with adaptive robots, building next-gen offerings, and enhancing their operational flexibility. A retail company with adaptive robots that rapidly prototype, can manufacture unique products more efficiently to keep up with consumer demand. New applications across industries are constantly emerging.
What are the implications for my business?
As adaptive robots are increasingly adopted and integrated with other emerging technologies, they will amplify the benefits and value already being realized by companies across the world. This adoption is inevitable. Your business needs to start its adaptive robotics journey today in order to stay ahead of the curve. IBM has the expertise to help you begin your path towards innovation with adaptive robotics today.Other authors -

Global business leaders are actively seeking to harness the transformative capabilities of the Cognitive Internet of Things (CIoT). The explosion of enterprise digitization has arisen from the massive increase in data stemming from human-to-device interactions. This digitalization dynamic provides consumers with greater market influence in terms of product and service choices, pricing and expectations. In turn, companies must continually rethink and reinvent their business models and product offerings to maintain speed, agility and relevance. CIoT drives the next generation of data analytics and technical capabilities. CIoT infuses intelligence and decision making into the physical world to continually transform businesses and enhance the human experience in real-time.
This report explores several use cases that highlight the power and capabilities of CIoT. These emerging trends demonstrate how today’s companies can offset constantly fluctuating market dynamics, create competitive advantages. improve customer relationships, and deliver quantifiable value to both the top and bottom lines. Also provided, is an overview of how CIoT can be applied across the enterprise from both a business and operating model perspective.
As technology evolves, CIoT will become smarter and faster. CIoT will take advantage of the current proliferation of APIs (application program interfaces) and the future expansion of open source systems. The evolution of CIoT will enhance the ability of companies to draw closer to their customers, as well as create new and differentiated product and service offerings.Other authors -

The purpose of this report is to provide business leaders a perspective of the emerging data economy and how to drive value through data monetization. Data, specifically Internet of Things (IoT) data, has become a strategic asset that can be sold and exchanged. Determining how to evaluate the potential uses of different types of data is complex and has far-reaching implications. Companies will need to evaluate their organization’s structure, go-to-market approach, and overall corporate identity in the lens of the new data economy.
We explore the various players in the data economy, describe how Data Producers - companies that assess, control, and produce data - are positioned for long-term success, and describe how companies in other layers of the data economy need to move up and down the data economy ‘stack’ or risk being marginalized. Aside from Data Producers, Data Presenters are playing an increasingly important role in the data economy. They are the interface to the end consumer and must create valuable user experiences or run the risk of devaluing data underneath.
For companies that cannot immediately participate in the data economy, there are still opportunities to play a critical role. We highlight the importance of industry specific taxonomies and how their creation and curation can generate value, independent of datasets.
As the data economy emerges, changes in customer expectations and technological advancements will transform supply chains into complex mesh ecosystems. Production strategies will shift and collaboration across organizations and ecosystems will create a more open flow of information and ideas. Companies will need to reinvent themselves by defining their desired role in the data economy through an evaluation of their engagement in these ecosystems. This will allow organizations to assess whether new business units, joint ventures, and/or acquisitions will be required.
