According to a GitHub study from March 2023, a staggering 92% of software engineers are already using AI coding assistants at work and in their personal time. Of those, 70% see significant benefits, and 81% believe these tools make their teams more collaborative. Even more interestingly, 41% of software engineers think AI coding assistants can help prevent burnout by reducing cognitive effort. The Cloud is an amazing change in how we work and building scalable systems quickly. However as the saying goes, “with great power comes great responsibility”. One area where this can factor in greatly is costs. It’s easy to spin up servers, databases and everything in between but while you may not “own” the computers they run on anymore, you’re definitely paying for them. There are many parts of the conversation, serverless vs instances, managed services vs deploying yourself. Size of instances, memory vs cpu and many more. Deploying your apps is certainly phase 1, but you should remember to monitor your account to track costs. Are you actually using everything effectively (cpu %, memory, or even network traffic). Remember to be responsible with what you spin up and keep your costs in mind. Review usage frequently and set standards with your org on how to use them. A simple example, noticed we had spun up a cache cluster as it made more sense than a database, however there was barely any data in this cache and we could have just used something simple in memory within the single service. Cost-wise it’s only a fraction of total $$ but lots of small items like this can add up quickly and make a big difference. #cloud #costs #scaling #responsibility #budget

But they are still developing products at an incredible pace and quality. From a Product perspective, they are hitting the nail on the head over and over again. Datadog releases things as early as possible as "Beta", "Private Beta" etc. This may frustrate users (as early products are immature), but it actually provides incredible opportunities for feedback. A bit of an observation: There are a lot more instances where Datadog goes past this "understanding platform" idea. It's now moving to be able to take action. This can be a slippery slope but I do think in many cases it makes loads of sense. A roundup from Datadog themselves of the keynote:

Serverless applications offer the power of end-to-end managed components. Good article on separation of concerns between business logic and topology which is essential for building clean and asynchronous serverless applications.
