    If you missed our discussion with Tanana Chiefs Conference (TCC) and Mayfield Renewables last week, it was a fascinating view into the challenges TCC faces in bringing cost-effective energy to eight remote villages in Alaska, and how they’re using microgrids as a strategy to reduce costs and improve reliability.     Xendee is proud to announce OPERATE, our AI powered microgrid controller that shows significant cost savings over existing hardware and rule-based microgrid controllers. Additionally, as part of Xendee’s integrated microgrid design platform, OPERATE controls the microgrid with the same algorithm used during our DISCOVER, PROPOSE, and DESIGN stages to streamline the engineering process and reach organizational goals and financial projections calculated in earlier stages. Multiple calibration projects have been completed, which validate OPERATE’s superior cost savings. One renewable based microgrid control technology involving batteries and other Distributed Energy Resources (DER), most recently implemented at the University of California San Diego (UCSD) and supported by CalTestBed showed up to 79.4% total cost savings compared to the existing controller. Another project completed in the Midwest, involving generators, PV, and batteries demonstrated up to 65% demand charge cost savings. Every DER (e.g. electric vehicle, or CHP system) can be considered in OPERATE for optimal dispatch. “The savings that we were able to demonstrate using Xendee are very impressive and above industry standard,” said Jan Kleissl, Director of UCSD Center for Energy Research. “This kind of efficiency is needed in the industry as we work together to reduce carbon emissions and do it in a way that’s economically sustainable.  Therefore, this project has the potential to be scaled to our UCSD campus-wide microgrid, including our electric vehicle chargers that are in the process of being upgraded.” Xendee is accepting a few additional project locations or partners for system integration in 2024.  If you would like to explore Xendee’s OPERATE controller or discuss potential partnership, please reach out to solutions@xendee.com.     Xendee was recently featured in the article, “Microgrids On-Grid, Off-Grid, Big and Small for EV Charging”, written by Lisa Cohn of Microgrid Knowledge. Here, she explores how wineries, cities, ports and other large energy consuming entities can skip utility interconnection delays and save money with microgrids. The article also uses data from our recent 2024 Commercial EV Charging Market Survey where we engaged with industry professionals to identify the biggest roadblocks and opportunities for the industry. This included over 75% of survey respondents reporting that electric grid limitations were a significant roadblock to the rollout of EV charging infrastructure and nearly 80% of respondents listing microgrids with onsite DERs as a top game changing technology.     Xendee was recently highlighted in an article by Solar Builder Magazine, showcasing how our software was used by Mayfield Renewables to help secure a $26M grant for microgrids in eight Alaskan villages that are part of the Tanana Chiefs Conference (TCC).  These microgrids will enable TCC to reduce their reliance on fossil fuels that are costly to purchase and transport, achieving their important sustainability and cost reduction objectives. “This feasibility study really unlocked what were our possibilities, and I would say really gave the funding agency, the granting officers at the Department of Energy, the confidence in us that we had gone to the experts in this field for that feasibility study.” -Eddie Dellamary, Rural Energy Specialist for the Tanana Chiefs Conference (TCC) Discover how Xendee’s advanced technology is revolutionizing microgrid design, optimization, and operation, making a significant impact on remote communities.     Data from Xendee’s 2024 Commercial EV Charging Survey shows that “DERs and Microgrids co-located with EV charging infrastructure” remains as the top “game changing technology for stimulating the transition to commercial EVs and EV fleets.” If we dig deeper into the data however, there’s an interesting year-over-year change. Compared to last year, the number of respondents indicating that “software to streamline the design of optimized EV charging infrastructure” was a top game-changing technology to stimulate commercial EV use, increased by 55%.  Up to 28% in 2024 from 18% of respondents who named it in 2023. The year-over-year shift in data suggests that survey respondents continue to view DERs and microgrids as top technologies to solve EV charging infrastructure challenges, but they increasingly realize an optimal mix and configuration of DERs and microgrids is essential to reaching the goals of the project and meeting the ever growing need for higher capacity. Additionally, the investment strategy must carry over from the feasibility stage all the way through to operation in order to realize the capabilities and financial projections established early on. Simply co-locating any DER with EV chargers isn’t a sharp enough approach. Obstacles are overcome primarily during a project’s design stage, and so success is made or broken at that point. The 2024 survey results reflect this deeper realization, which highlights both the evolving complexity of projects and the value of EV charging infrastructure planning and design tools.
