Joining forces with Bridges to Prosperity, a team of Thornton Tomasetti Gives Back volunteers last month travelled to Rwanda to construct the Makurungwe trail bridge over the Musogoro River.   The 64-meter-long cable-suspended bridge now provides more than 3,000 community members safe, year-round access to markets, schools, healthcare and new opportunities.   From construction challenges to daily engagements with the community and local schoolchildren and the joyful inauguration, follow the link in the post below for a recap of the build. #bridgestoprosperity #B2P #volunteering

Fans got their first look at the new home of the National Hockey League’s Calgary Flames at a groundbreaking ceremony this past Monday. The 18,000-seat Scotia Place, located in the Canadian city’s emerging Culture + Entertainment District, will be the focal point of a 10-block development that will feature a community ice rink, indoor and outdoor plazas, restaurants, retail shops and parking. The project team includes architects DIALOG and HOK, project manager CAA ICON, general contractors Cana Construction and Mortenson with Thornton Tomasetti, in collaboration with Entuitive, providing structural engineering services. The arena’s design celebrates the region’s indigenous heritage and incorporates the four elements of nature: fire, water, land and air. It is also being designed with sustainability features that could make the building net-zero by 2050. Scotia Place will replace ScotiaBank Saddledome, which was built in 1983 and is one of the oldest arenas in the NHL. In addition to the flames, the arena will host concerts, festivals and professional and amateur sporting events. It will also serve as home for Calgary’s junior hockey and lacrosse leagues teams. How can we increase the use of mass timber in the built environment and take full advantage of its sustainable qualities? Incorporating it into more tall and midrise buildings is just one solution. As part of the “Mass Timber Semester” lecture series hosted by The Skyscraper Museum, a panel of experts will discuss the rise of mass-timber and hybrid structural systems and ways of optimizing their use. Speakers include mass timber specialists Vice President Alejandro Fernandez of Thornton Tomasetti, Benton Johnson of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), EQUILIBRIUM's Eric Karsh and Daniel Safarik, the director of research at the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) and co-author of the CTBUH Technical Guides on Tall Timber. The in-person event, “Tall Timber: Height & Hybrids,” will take place next Tuesday, July 23, at our New York office, at 120 Broadway, at 6:00 p.m. Registration is required.
