The Manchester Metropolitan Library Transformation Project (LTP) will transform the existing 1970s library at The Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) with a 13-storey modern and dynamic “learning tower”, with a five-storey tail, whilst retaining and re-using as much of the existing structure as possible. Buro Happold is providing multidisciplinary consultancy across a broad range of specialisms, working closely with the wider design team, led by Hawkins\Brown. The landmark development will replace the existing All Saints Library on Oxford Road to make way for a library fit for the 21st century, which places students and their learning at its core. Our team has helped to deliver a vision for a library that meets the needs of today’s students, creating a comfortable environment in which to learn, in a project that puts sustainability at its core. Did you know that one of the earliest ideas of solar power, called the ‘sunpower screen’, was featured in a sci-fi short story in the 1940s? The past, present and future of energy in the UK is explored in our latest ‘Sandbox’ episode... When the Industrial Revolution began in the 18th century, the concept of energy became a prominent discussion, and continues to be to the present day. In the UK, we currently use various sustainable power sources, making up nearly 50% of our energy outputs, including solar and wind energy. But the question is: What next? In our latest Sandbox Episode, ‘Powering On - Energy: Past, Present & Future', our panel discusses how we have got to this point and what potential future methods we could be using to power our energy sources. From the idea of ‘energy islands’ being an efficient way for communities to decide how their local area is powered, to whether hydrogen is the future of specific forms of transportation such as flight, we delve into what our energy systems could look like now and in the future, and what the individual can do to help. Joining our regular host Andy Duncan in this episode, are Buro Happold energy experts Maddie McTaggart, Associate Director and Ben Jones, Associate Director. Our special guest in this episode is Professor Iwan Morus, an author, science historian and professor of history at Aberystwyth University. Iwan has written numerous books, including his most recent work, 'How the Victorians Took Us to the Moon' (Icon, 2022) which looked at concepts from sci-fi authors as well as contemporary ‘inventors’ such as Tesla. Click the links below to listen to the full episode and subscribe to the whole series; Sometimes we’ll tackle a subject head on, sometimes a sideways view - but always with curiosity, expertise and maybe even a dash of humour. Missed any of our ‘Sandbox’ podcasts? Here is a quick re-cap of Episode One that may pique your interest... With the UK losing 3.71 billion litres of water everyday through leaks, our first episode of ‘Sandbox’ - ‘Troubled Waters’ - explored the pressing challenges we face with our water management system, and potential solutions moving forward. From rainwater harvesting to ‘two-tier’ water systems, our panel discussed a plethora of ideas. Joining our regular host, Andy Duncan, were our own Buro Happold experts, Louise Clarke, Associate, Water Management, Duncan Ker-Reid, Technical Director, Cities Water, and special guest, Tom McNamara, Founder and Director of FreeUP. In these ‘Pod in a Nutshell’ blogs, we summarise each Sandbox episode into a quick read, looking at the main ideas discussed – think of these as an aperitif before diving into listening to the full episode! Buro Happold’s facade experts played a crucial role in realising the complex architectural vision for a new cultural centre in China’s Guangdong Province, named Lounge of Blues. The centre has become an instant local landmark and sets a benchmark for island eco-tourism. The building’s eye-catching aesthetic is inspired by the vast sea it overlooks. However, constructing so close to the sea can present its own challenges. It was vital that our solutions would prove resilient in the face of the erosive tendencies of the sea air and coastal weather conditions. It is with great delight that we are sharing the news that our colleague, Associate MEP engineer William Holley CEng MCIBSE Holley has won the prestigious CIBSE Ken Dale Travel Bursary. Will, who is based at our Hamburg office, was selected from among a group of eight finalists by a jury from the Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE), who grants the bursary every year to members to undertake research in their field of work to benefit the engineering profession. With the money he receives from the bursary he will travel to Finland, China and Japan to investigate the integration of heat pump technology into the built environment. He aims to disseminate his insights and establish design guidance to aid engineers to effectively integrate heat pumps into their projects. Will’s research will benefit Buro Happold as well as the wider construction industry to transition to low-carbon heat and achieve net zero carbon buildings. https://lnkd.in/d8pfCYYZ #burohappold #engineering #buildingservices #MEP #heatpumps #CIBSE

Buro Happold supported Citi to develop a transformational vision for the refurbishment of the iconic 25 Canada Square in Canary Wharf, also known as Citi Tower. Believed to currently be the largest active commercial retrofit project in Europe, it will create a stunning workplace for the future, incorporating the latest technology and the highest standards of environmental design. Citi identified the importance of updating the tower to better reflect the needs of a modern workplace. Buro Happold was engaged to provide specialist insight around facades engineering, which given the nature of the interventions, is a key discipline in the success of the project. We are working closely with the wider design team, led by WilkinsonEyre to realise this stunning transformation. Today’s investors are increasingly prioritising the ESG (environmental, social and governance) impact of the investments within their portfolio, particularly around the relevant ESG metrics required to make sound investment decisions. PIC (Pension Insurance Corporation plc) prides itself on purposeful investment and recently enlisted Buro Happold to advise on how to embed an ESG strategy that could balance managing and mitigating risks with creating value and opportunity that could lead to long term growth. Buro Happold’s ESG experts were initially brought on board to develop an ESG framework to assess future assets investments, at due diligence stage. The process was adopted and implemented across new build residential, commercial offices, Build to Rent, senior living and existing buildings acquisitions. PIC is committed to helping the property sector transition to be more environmentally-conscious as it considers this a forward-looking investment opportunity and the right thing to do for the wider society. Through our partnership, Buro Happold conducted a deep dive into PIC’s real estate asset pipeline and portfolio. A key element of the solutions proposed included assessing PIC’s assets, to benchmark where they stand now and undertake an in-depth and unflinching assessment of the company’s ESG due diligence gaps. Following this exercise our experts built a proprietary ESG toolkit for private market investment due diligence. PIC is now able to apply this bespoke, market-leading framework to all potential investments and is applying the framework retrospectively to the existing build-to-rent portfolio. Did you know Tower Bridge was once raised to allow a giraffe to pass through? Or that the London Underground has its own ghost stations? These are just some of the fascinating facts, unsolved mysteries and engineering marvels that lie waiting to be discovered. Buro Happold’s Global Transport & Mobility team and walking tour provider, Footways have collaborated on the launch of the Great British Engineering Map. This map allows visitors and residents of London to explore the city’s most incredible feats of engineering, from the ancient remains of Roman Londinium’s walls and aqueducts, to the Victorian splendour of St Pancras Station, to modern icons such as The Shard. Walkers will encounter engineering masterpieces, past and present, as they explore the hidden tunnels and forgotten structures that have shaped the London streetscape. The Great British Engineering Adventure map provides several circular routes to choose from, designed to suit all ages and abilities. You can follow a 15, 30 or 60 minute walk through Central London or, for the more adventurous, you can hop on your bike and complete the full 18 mile route around the city. Whichever you decide, you’ll be treated to feature-filled streets and beautiful green spaces along the way. Grab your map, get out into nature, and show your kids the value of STEM in shaping our world. The route can be viewed here: https://lnkd.in/eeqAS5SE To pre-register for our Urban Explorers Club click here: https://lnkd.in/eQ5v6rmQ #engineering #map #london #walking #STEM #families
