Initial thoughts on the big news from earlier this week -- Google's, not Biden's. 😉
#Cookies are here to stay! #PrivacySandbox is dead! Neither of these statements is true. Google’s announcement yesterday (https://lnkd.in/e2pR7Dpp) is largely about: 1) shifting the fate of 3rd-party cookies to users, rather than browsers 2) somewhat decoupling Sandbox’s ramp up from cookies’ ramp down. This change is arguably similar to Apple’s ATT (App Tracking Transparency) approach, except that Google seems more interested in ensuring that consumers make informed and not alarmist decisions about “tracking” and more attuned to mitigating the impact on advertising-driven businesses (via Sandbox and other efforts). That said, informed consumers are still likely to opt out of 3P cookies in large numbers when this choice is presented prominently and the gradual deprecation of cookies therefore feels even more certain now than with the prior dramatic cutover approach. Meanwhile, Privacy Sandbox development will continue -- and IP address appears next to be deprecated, starting with Incognito Mode. Timing of all changes is unknown and there are certainly hurdles to clear (UK CMA included), but this all feels more pragmatic, if potentially more complicated to navigate. If you see this as a time to shift focus away from more durable, private #advertising solutions, please rethink that POV.
