💥 Today is National Intern Day, and we are celebrating Slipstream intern Timothy Reidell. 🙌 National Intern Day is recognized every year on the last Thursday of July. It provides employers with the opportunity to recognize and thank their hardworking interns. For Slipstream, it assures that our work toward a sustainable climate will continue. 🏢 Timothy started with Slipstream in June as an Energy Engineering Intern after discovering his passion for sustainability and environmental studies at the University of Minnesota where he majored in Building Science. Interests grew in the areas of energy-efficient buildings, their effects on occupant health, and affordable housing solutions, which prompted Timothy’s decision to pursue a master’s degree in architectural engineering at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago. At Slipstream Timothy assists with energy and equipment compliance and is proud to have a meaningful impact on projects. He is encouraged by the opportunities for continuing education and professional growth and appreciates Slipstream’s focus on equity. Much of his work has been for new affordable housing projects and Midwest Indigenous communities. 💬 He states, “If we are to transition to a clean energy economy, we must make sure that our more vulnerable communities aren’t left behind and excluded from the conversation.” We are thrilled to have Timothy on board and look forward to his contributions to the climate! 💪 #NationalInternDay #EnergyEfficiency #CleanEnergyCareers

For this week's Whiteboard Wednesday, we'd like to introduce you to... Kevin Frost, PE! 👏 Kevin is a Senior Energy Engineer at Slipstream, and this week, he's unpacking the question "What's VRF, and how does it save energy?". 👉 VRF (variable refrigerant flow) is an energy-saving measure that can help heat and cool spaces more efficiently, particularly older, historic buildings that might need retrofitting or multiunit buildings such as hotels, apartments, or office spaces. Tune in for more info (and, of course, some whiteboard drawings✏️ ) on how VRF works in large, multiunit spaces. And, if you'd like to learn more, check out some of Kevin's research on VRFs in cold climates: https://bit.ly/4bWhi95 #VRF #Decarbonization #HeatPumps #ColdClimateVRF 🎥 Visual Video Description: An introduction slide with the Whiteboard Wednesday logo "bounces" into the frame over a blue background with white text that reads "What's VRF, and how does it save energy?". Kevin talks directly to the camera while pointing to drawings on a whiteboard behind him. We see intermittent close-ups of the drawings while Kevin points. At the end of the video, a teal green background appears with white text that reads "Stay tuned for more" and the white version of the Whiteboard Wednesday logo. The website URL "slipstreaminc.org" is at the bottom of the screen in magenta text.

We love seeing Slipstreamers and our partners come together! Last week, we had a chance to celebrate our new Chicago office with staff and partners. We shared some valuable conversations 💬, made full use of our whiteboard wall ✏️ , and celebrated the elegant (and energy efficient!) design of the new space. 🏛️ Designed by our engineers at Slipstream in collaboration with Farr Associates Architecture & Urban Design and Kent Consulting, the suite is an example of applying modern efficiency retrofits to a historic space in the Civic Opera Building. Some of these measures might even make their way to future programs! 💡 For now, our Chicago team is just enjoying community and glad to have an efficient and beautiful place to call home! 🎉 #Decarbonization #CivicOperaBuilding #TeamSlipstream Visual video description: A slideshow of photos from Slipstream's recent Open House event at their Chicago office.

Every new career starts with an opportunity. 🌠 With a $1.9 million award from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) Innovation Grants, Faith in Place, a Chicago-based nonprofit, will collaborate with Slipstream and OAI, Inc. to increase the diversity of workers in the home energy performance and energy efficiency sector. The project team will use Faith in Place's trusted Green Team model to engage residents in the Chicago region who are often overlooked or underrepresented in the clean energy workforce. Slipstream will conduct trainings in weatherization and building science to build participants' skills in assessing and improving home energy performance. By the end of the three-year grant period, 30-45 Illinoisans will be prepared for long-term career success and to begin their journey as newly minted clean energy professionals.
