  • Today, NCAC received a gift from the Air & Space Forces Association of 50 United States flags which had previously been displayed circling the Air Force Memorial in Arlington, VA. Thank you to Col. Stu Pettis, Director of their STEM Education Programs, for reaching out to make this donation to our Scouts and delivering them to Deputy Scout Executive Lee Murdoch at the Marriott Scout Service Center. We look forward to proudly flying the flags in our Council! #usflag #scouting #usairforcememorial

  • When Scouting America visited Washington, D.C., Scouts and adult leaders met with Congressional offices to highlight the importance of programs for the nation’s youth and to discuss the positive impact these youth programs can have on our communities. By all indications, the message was well received. “There is no better program in the nation to instill leadership and good character in our youth than Scouting America,” said Rep. Glenn Thompson of Pennsylvania, co-chair of the Congressional Scouting Caucus and himself a Distinguished Eagle Scout Award recipient. During the visit, Cub Scouts from NCAC Pack 98 provided a Pinewood Derby track and cars for officials to race and participants were able to choose from a nice selection of pre-made vehicles. It was no surprise when, "NASA astronaut and Distinguished Eagle Scout Award recipient Mike Fossum immediately picked out the space shuttle Pinewood Derby car and challenged all of the Cubs Scouts to race." Scouting is just as important today as it ever has been!

  • When Scouting America visited Washington, D.C. last week, NCAC Cub Scouts demonstrated first-hand how Scouting teaches about physics and engineering by holding a Pinewood Derby in the U.S. Capitol. While doing so, they also showed how much fun the program really can be! "Bringing real excitement and competition to the meeting, Cub Scouts from Pack 98 of National Capitol Area Council provided a Pinewood Derby track and cars for officials to race. Special guest NASA astronaut and Distinguished Eagle Scout Award recipient Mike Fossum immediately picked-out the Space Shuttle Pinewood Derby car and challenged all Cubs Scouts to race." “For over a century, Scouting America has provided the nation's premier program for character development and values-based leadership training for more than 130 million young men and women,” said Roger Krone, president and chief executive officer of Scouting America. “We want to thank our elected officials for their unwavering support for advancing the mission of Scouting, and we look forward to another century of working together."

National Capital Area Council, Boy Scouts of America seeks a Chief Development Officer to serve as a key member of the National Capital Area Council (NCAC) senior leadership team, advising on an organization-wide vision and strategy for the transformation of charitable giving and annual fundraising efforts. The Chief Development Officer will focus on and serve as the lead fundraiser for all major gifts defined as $100,000 or greater as well as capital and endowment fundraising activities for the Council. As the largest youth serving Council within the Boy Scouts of America, currently serving around 34,000 youth, the Chief Development Officer's ability to successfully secure funding for key initiatives is a critical part of NCAC's ability to achieve its vision of serving at least 50,000 youth in the coming years. National Capital Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America was organized in 1911 and today is one of the oldest and largest councils in America. NCAC delivers the promise of Scouting to youth in Washington, D.C., 16 counties in Maryland and Virginia, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and to U.S. citizens abroad in North, Central, and South America. Its programs teach young people to “Be Prepared!” for adventure, education, service, and leadership. The Boy Scouts of America’s National Capital Area Council prepares youth for life through outstanding programs that inspire, build character, and instill the values that young people need to succeed today. The mission of the Boy Scouts of America is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law. • Yesterday, "Scouting The Hill" was hosted by Scouting America in partnership with the bipartisan Scouting Congressional Caucus comprised Congressmen who were Scouts as youth, are Scouts as adults, or who support the efforts of the international Scouting movement. Formal remarks were made by members of the Scouting Caucus, Scouting America Scout Executive/CEO Roger Krone, and special guest COL Mike Fossum who is a former American astronaut, engineer, and the Chief Operating Officer of Texas A&M University. Our Council was honored to assist in this legislative effort. As part of the reception, Cub Scout Pack 98 from Washington, DC set up and raced a Pinewood Derby in the U.S. Capitol. Members of Congress and their staff were invited to join in the races. We believe this was the very first time a Pinewood Derby was held at the Capitol. We are grateful to the Pack leadership for arranging this fun and distinctive activity. https://lnkd.in/eEpabiYm

  • On Tuesday NCAC was honored to host a delegation from Boy Scouts of America who are making visits to the U.S. Capitol this week to further the mission of Scouting with a renewed bipartisan coalition on the Hill, the Congressional Scouting Caucus. Members of NCAC’s Executive Board and staff along with government leaders identified as part of our Council welcomed Roger Krone, President & CEO; Scott Sorrels, National Commissioner; Michael Ramsey, Senior Vice President for Marketing & Communications; Scott Armstrong, Director of National Media Relations & Government Affairs; and the Honorable Valerie Baldwin, advisor to Scouting America’s Government Affairs, to DC and share a time of fellowship. Establishing strong relationships is critical to expanding Scouting and better serving our youth. If you are in a position to help expand the Congressional Scouting Caucus, please let us know that you would like to join the effort. Thank you to Bob Wood, Former Board President and current Endowment Chair, and his team at BGR Group for hosting the event in The Homer Building.

  • A recent study conducted by The Harris Poll on behalf of Scouting America shows that those who have been involved in Scouting as youth or adults have what we are calling a “Scouting edge.” This research indicates, "Scouts and Scouting alumni are more likely to engage in positive behaviors, more likely to act in ways that are considered ethical and moral, and generally express a greater willingness to fight for their country.' The Aaron on Scouting blog states the biggest takeaway is "Scouts and non-Scouts, alumni and non-alumni, agree that Scouting improves our country across a variety of vectors – in particular, they recognize the 'somewhat' or 'extremely' positive effects Scouting has on one’s leadership abilities and the competency to help others accomplish their goals."
