"Azhar, her family, and Sudanese-American friends foster belonging out of loss. War is destroying their home country: They’re grieving siblings and grandparents who’ve died in Sudan. They’re trying to help the rest of their families survive a dire humanitarian emergency the world has largely ignored. But Sudanese communities are flourishing in New Haven. They’re always inviting people to gather with them–at Lighthouse Point, at East Rock Park, in their backyards." Welcoming refugees & immigrants, and enriching CT’s community since 1982.
About us
IRIS (Integrated Refugee & Immigrant Services) is a dynamic, national refugee resettlement agency with offices in New Haven and Hartford, CT and staff located across the country. IRIS serves people from all over the world who have fled persecution in their home countries to start new lives and become contributing members of their new communities. This happens in two ways: staff-facilitated resettlement in Connecticut and staff supporting community and private sponsorship of refugees across the U.S. The latter program is through our membership in the seven-organization consortium called "Welcome Corps". While IRIS has traditionally focused on helping refugees, it is increasingly serving our undocumented neighbors and other immigrants as well.

Congratulations, class of 2024! 🎓 We love seeing clients like Reem, Arifullah & Shahidullah move up & succeed in school. Our clients don't take education for granted — many have had their schooling interrupted by war & have had to quickly learn English while they adjust to their new home. We're in awe of your ambition & know you're on your way to accomplishing big things! Thanks to the teachers in our community & the IRIS Education team for providing in-school tutoring, summer classes, leadership programs & so much more! #education #classof2024 #graduation

With IRIS' help, Kallou, his wife, Elham, and their sons are rebuilding their lives after fleeing #Sudan. Our team found them housing, enrolled them in English classes, and registered the boys in school. Kallou aspires to be an accountant and Elham plans to become a nurse. Life is good, and yet, their hearts are with the people of Sudan, especially their home region, the Nuba Mountains. "We need others to join us here. America brings in a lot of immigrants from other countries but there aren’t a lot of people from the Nuba region of Sudan." Kallou reminds us to keep our eyes on Sudan, especially as the civil war has entered its second year, and millions are displaced. For more reflections from the Sudanese diaspora, check out our website: https://lnkd.in/dnUJYBhu

"It’s hard to be new in this country, especially when you don’t know the language. Fortunately, I found sympathetic people at IRIS. I’m creative and I’ve always liked doing something with my hands. This is how the idea of making Ukrainian dolls, called Motankas, was born." 🇺🇦 Zhanna (pictured left) arrived to the U.S. through the Uniting for Ukraine program program, which gives Ukrainians fleeing war a pathway to safety in America. Zhanna is getting help from Svetlana (pictured right) & the rest of the IRIS team with settling into her apartment, learning English & finding employment. She's paying homage to her roots by creating Ukrainian Motanka dolls, which represent hope & well-being. Read more on Zhanna's story: https://bit.ly/4bxyth7 #U4U #Ukraine #motanka

"Solidarity with refugees goes beyond empathy: it means taking real actions that show our shared humanity and commitment to justice and equality." Dr. Simone Bamba reflects on her journey as a Haitian immigrant and why she, along with her church, are paying it forward for refugees. They've sponsored Ibrahim from Somalia through Welcome Corps, with help from IRIS. Read her full op-ed via The Haitian Times: bit.ly/3XGdBRu #Haiti #refugee #payitforward
