Positive psychology was an explicit reaction to psychoanalysis. “Let's not focus on the deepest, darkest corners of the soul. Let's only focus on strengths,” it said. This perspective is oversimplified for a couple of reasons. 1) If you want to get better at anything (chess, tennis, guitar, leadership, etc.), you have to address your mistakes. You have to stop doing some things and start doing other things. 2) If you overuse your strengths, they can become hindrances—we call them derailers. Behaviors that worked at one time won't always keep working. You can't just keep doing more of what you've always done. That's foolish.
