Don't underestimate the power of water! From July 24 to 26, portions of the United States (US), including the South, Gulf Coast, and East Coast, will experience excessive rainfall, increasing the chances of a flash flood. According to the National Weather Service (NWS), it only takes six inches of moving water to sweep an adult off of their feet and 12 inches to carry a small car. Excessive rainfall, failure of dams, and failure of levees may lead to flash flooding that can produce enough power to rapidly displace people and objects. Maximizing preparation for flooding may reduce potential risks and is crucial for safety of persons, pets, and property. Several federal disaster assistance programs face fiscal uncertainty amidst ongoing disaster recovery efforts and increasing hurricane and wildfire related risks. Today, we share a piece co-authored for the Bipartisan Policy Center (BPC) by Hagerty's Senior Advisor for Community Recovery, Stan Gimont, and Director of BPC's Disaster Response Reform Task Force, Andy Winkler, which outlines the Biden administration’s outstanding requests for supplemental disaster funding, key programs such funding would support, and the implications of delayed funding for disaster-impacted communities. Also featured in this article is Hagerty's Executive Chairman and Former Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Administrator, Brock Long, who discusses the lack of clarity on funding that hobbles effective response at the state and local levels. National Weather Service (NWS) officials confirmed that a powerful derecho impacted communities across the Midwest on July 15, producing at least 19 tornados in the Chicagoland area and Indiana. Although tornadoes are most common in the Central Plains and South, the NWS cautions that strong storm systems have the capability to produce tornados in any of the 50 States. Tornadoes pose potential threats to persons and properties as they may damage structures, uproot trees, and displace heavy objects. These dangerous conditions associated with tornadic activity make it critical for individuals to understand how to safeguard and protect their household in the event of a tornado.
