RECORD-BREAKING ALERT! ‼️ A historic 17 California condor chicks hatched at the L.A. Zoo during this year's breeding season– all of which will be candidates for release into the wild as part of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) California Condor Recovery Program (CCRP). The 17th and final chick of the season hatched in June, and all are thriving. The previous record of 15 California condor chicks hatched at the L.A. Zoo in one season was set in 1997. “This is a historic moment for the CCRP and the Zoo’s animal care team,” said Rose Legato, Curator of Birds. “Our condor team has raised the bar once again in the collaborative effort to save America’s largest flying bird from extinction." About us
The Greater Los Angeles Zoo Association (GLAZA) is a nonprofit corporation created in 1963 to support the Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens. Currently GLAZA operates seven essential functions for the City-owned Zoo, including fundraising for the Zoo's programs and capital projects, membership, volunteers, marketing and public relations, special events and site rentals, concessions and retail and publications. GLAZA also works to nurture a commitment to wildlife and conservation support, as well as to foster community support for the L.A. Zoo, its mission and programs. GLAZA and the L.A. Zoo share a common mission: To serve the community, we will create an environment for recreation and discovery; inspire an appreciation of wildlife through exhibitry and education; ensure the highest level of animal welfare; and support programs that preserve biodiversity and conserve natural habitat. We also share a vision: We will leverage the diverse resources of Los Angeles to be an innovator for the global zoo community, creating dynamic experiences to connect people and animals.

The L.A. Zoo is thrilled to announce a new exhibit at Los Angeles World Airports's Tom Bradley International Terminal as part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums's Wildlife Trafficking Alliance (WTA) campaign, "I Travel for Wildlife." The campaign aims at eliminating the trade of illegal wildlife and wildlife products that contribute to the decrease of wildlife populations across the world. The exhibit features authentic contraband confiscated and donated by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and California Department of Fish and Wildlife -- all items are commonly available to travelers overseas, such as jewelry, accessories, purses, and decorative items. Each example serves as a sobering reminder of the toll exacted by the illegal wildlife trade on endangered species and ecosystems. Travelers will leave this exhibit more informed so they can buy informed when abroad. More information can be found at https://lnkd.in/gU3buiYT.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the last California grizzly bear being spotted in Sequoia National Park, never to be seen again. This state icon is an example of the beautiful and unique native Californian wildlife that can too easily be lost. To commemorate this anniversary, institutions from around the state are coming together to declare 2024 the year to "Coexist with Wildlife, California.” Stay tuned for events, activities, and information this summer highlighting threatened native Californian species, and to learn what you can do to #CoexistWithWildlifeCalifornia. https://lnkd.in/gehzQQet

Gorilla grunts of congratulations to GLAZA Director of Publications Brenda Scott Royce! Her kids' book, Angela & Lulingu, won the Silver award for Best Nonfiction Children's Book at the Independent Book Publishers Association Benjamin Franklin Awards. The book highlights the Zoo's very own gorilla, Angela, and Gorilla Rehabilitation and Conservation Education (GRACE) Center's rescue gorilla Lulingu. Readers learn how these two young gorillas—one in Los Angeles, the other in Africa—have inspired millions of people to care about gorillas and their future. Angela & Lulingu is not just a book; it is a catalyst for positive change. A portion of the proceeds from its sales directly supports GRACE, demonstrating the Zoo and GLAZA’s commitment to making a tangible impact on gorilla conservation efforts. Grab your copy today at the Zoo's gift shop, or online at https://bit.ly/3QOlr7t.
