Eliminating barriers. Inspiring young minds.
About us
Education transforms lives. First Book is building a world where every child has access to a quality education. We work to remove barriers to education and level the playing field for kids in need. At the heart of our work are the 575,000 members of the First Book Network, the largest online community of individual educators, professionals and volunteers dedicated to supporting children in need across North America. This Network is the key to creating systemic change. Through our research arm, First Book Research & Insights, we conduct studies that aggregate their voices to identify barriers to equitable education and inform strategic solutions. To address their needs, we provide free and low-cost books, resources, and access to leading experts through the First Book Marketplace, which uses aggregated buying power to support this underserved community. Founded in Washington D.C. in 1992 as a nonprofit social enterprise, First Book is dedicated to eliminating barriers to learning and inspiring young minds. What an exhilarating week we've had on our First Book Corporate Partner Roadshow, visiting our incredible friends at The Walt Disney Company, KPMG US, and the LEGO Group! It was truly inspiring to celebrate our successes with these dedicated partners, brainstorm innovative program ideas, and volunteer together to make a lasting impact on the communities we serve. The important work we do to remove the barriers to an equitable education by supporting our network of more than 600,000 educators serving kids in need, wouldn’t be possible without the collective power of partnership with some of the world’s most phenomenal organizations. Want to join us?! Reach out to learn more — your company just might be on our next roadshow!!

Discovering a passion for #STEAM today empowers girls to lead and shape a more equal metaverse tomorrow. By 6th grade, many girls start losing interest in STEAM disciplines. Storytelling shapes futures, yet male STEAM characters outnumber female ones 2:1. Let’s change the narrative! We're thrilled to share that Rebel Girls, Reality Labs at Meta, and First Book have joined forces to highlight incredible women in STEAM fields! Rebel Girls has generously donated tens of thousands of books to First Book over the years. We are proud to continue this impactful partnership with their latest donation of 5,000 copies of their new title, Rebel Girls Build the Future, bringing the joy of reading to underserved communities and Title I schools. Rebel Girls Build the Future, out on November 5, 2024, celebrates 18 women in STEAM who are breaking barriers, leading change, and advancing careers related to the metaverse. The book includes activities to inspire creativity. Learn more here: https://bit.ly/3Sd36ll #STEAMeducation #InspiringGirls #EducationForAll #STEMEducation

Rebel Girls Build the Future is a new storytelling collaboration with Reality Labs celebrating women technologists helping to build the metaverse. https://lnkd.in/dKRFFSVP Rebel Girls has showcased more than 400 careers across 2,000+ stories inspiring girls around the world to dream big. We believe in equipping girls with skills today to be successful tomorrow (and change the world). This partnership celebrates women in STEAM who are breaking barriers, leading change, and advancing careers related to the metaverse including art, engineering, and design so that we can close the STEAM gender gap. ⚡ Girls begin to lose interest (and confidence in their abilities) in STEM disciplines around middle school. (Source: Girl Scouts of the USA Generation STEM Report) ⚡ Parents are 2x more likely to encourage boys to engage in coding than girls (the LEGO Group Ready for Girls Creativity Study) ⚡ Only 23% of engineering bachelor’s degrees are awarded to women (Source: National Science Foundation (NSF)) ⚡ Only 22% of computer and information science bachelor’s degrees are awarded to women. (Source: WomenTech Network) ⚡ Women hold less than 10% of leadership positions at orgs driving metaverse standards (Source: McKinsey & Company, Mina Alaghband and Lareina Yee) It’s important for girls from all backgrounds and means to see themselves as potential leaders and creators of the future. Reality Labs and Rebel Girls are partnering with First Book, a nonprofit organization that works to remove barriers to education and provide equitable opportunities for under-represented children, to distribute 5,000 copies of Rebel Girls Build the Future to underserved communities and Title I schools. Rebel Girls has donated tens of thousands of books to First Book over the years, and are proud to continue reaching so many additional kids through this partnership. We want to thank Rachel M. Cross, Head of Art at Reality Labs, for her thoughtfulness and intention in this collaboration. As a mom raising two Rebel Girls, she has been reading Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls and giving Growing Up Powerful to her daughters for many years. You can read more about our partnership and Rachel’s passion for this project: https://lnkd.in/dtakzZZK Together, let’s encourage girls to discover their passion and interest in STEAM today and empower their confidence to be the leaders needed to help build the metaverse of tomorrow.

Tata Volunteers from Tata Group - North America, JLR North America, and Air India Limited engaged with over 100 kindergarten students for a reading celebration that took place on June 14th, in Toronto, Canada. The event was curated with the support of our long-term partners First Book and First Book Canada and as always turned out to be a fantastic opportunity for Tata colleagues to engage with and read to the students. Volunteers read one of four books on the alphabet, imagination, diversity, and inclusion. Each student received a copy of the book read to them to take home! We are grateful for another successful reading celebration, and to our dedicated volunteers for being so committed to the cause of reading and always coming out to support! Stay tuned for their thoughts on the experience. #ThisIsTata #TataCanada
