FREE EVENT ANNOUNCEMENT: United to End Child Drownings Drowning remains the leading cause of death for children ages 1-4. As of July 22, the Florida Department of Children & Families reports that 67 child drowning fatalities have occurred in 2024 alone. This is an alarmingly high number! The CDC estimates that for every fatality, another 7 or 8 children are seen in emergency departments for non-fatal drowning, leaving some children with lifelong injuries. In conjunction with the launch of "The Clothes They Wore" campaign, the NDPA will host an event at the Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Center on Tuesday, August 6, from 10am-2pm, to draw attention to the epidemic of drowning. The event will include a water safety fair and media program. We invite you to join us! Adapted swim programs address the higher risk of drowning by providing a supportive and customized learning environment tailored to each individual's unique needs. Each swimmer will have different cognitive, behavioral, and sensory processing responses, which are carefully considered in adapted swim lessons. These programs focus on: - Safety Techniques: Teaching life-saving skills such as floating, treading water, and safe entry and exit from the pool. - Sensory Considerations: Creating a calming and predictable environment to accommodate sensory sensitivities. - Clear Communication: Using visual aids and straightforward instructions to enhance understanding. - Social Interaction: Encouraging structured social engagement within a supportive setting, often in one-to-one lessons. - Personalized Approaches: Utilizing adaptive equipment and individualized teaching methods to meet diverse needs. By providing these tailored programs, we can significantly reduce the risk of drowning and ensure that all individuals can safely enjoy the water.
