As the Digital Information and Smart Data Bill is reintroduced in the UK Parliament, the first UK Smart Data Forum aims to support the strategic development of UK Smart Data Economy. This forum will provide valuable insights and knowledge, directly influenced by key decision makers, influencers and stakeholders to help unlock the estimated £28bn economic potential of data portability for the UK economy. This strategic gathering aims to accelerate access to the £28bn UK Smart Data opportunity. There's no time to waste, and thankfully much of the groundwork has already been laid. Proud to share that a new DTP-powered data portability tool is being released today from Data Transfer Initiative and members Apple and Google — the ability to transfer photos directly from Google Photos to iCloud Photos. Over the next few years, we can work together to empower people in a healthy digital ecosystem - and the centerpiece is data portability. Read more in DTI's new vision paper. For those interested in the intersection of #privacy and #competition, #data sharing is one policy area that stands out. This is because such operations typically involve personal data while they may also lower barriers to entry by granting smaller companies access to valuable insights. In this context, the concept of data portability plays a significant role. This right, which I personally discovered during the glorious #GDPR negotiations, has significantly evolved over the years: Initially centered around an individual's right to download a copy of their personal information, it has evolved to facilitate direct transfers between services at the user's request. Now, the #DigitalMarketsAct takes a further step by allowing direct transfer to third parties with user consent. This wider scope of data portability will likely lead to a notable increase in the seamless transfer of personal data among digital services, eventually extending beyond your personal photos or playlists. However, this ease of sharing also brings heightened risks for users, raising the critical question of how to foster trust in these direct transfers. In recent months, I've had the privilege of working closer with the Data Transfer Initiative (DTI), a nonprofit organization dedicated to facilitating data transfer among digital services. In support of the objectives of data portability, DTI has developed a third-party trust model for direct personal data transfers. This model presents a structured framework for building trust among all parties involved with suggested questions that cover various critical areas. These areas include, among others, proper user identification (e.g., methods of authentication) and authorization (e.g., mechanisms for parental control for minors), as well as ensuring users have a clear understanding of the type and frequency of data transfer. The model also emphasizes the importance of safeguarding data post-receipt such as protecting against loss or unauthorized access. The primary objective of DTI's trust model is to safeguard the interests of users, as well as those of the sending and receiving services. It aims to strike a delicate balance, avoiding practices that create substantial friction thus hindering data sharing, while also steering clear of overly permissive approaches that may allow bad actors to exploit the system, thus eroding trust in the concept of data portability. Also today, Data Transfer Initiative released our brand-new Data Portability Map, a prototype/beta tool designed to help internet users take advantage of data portability. Our open-source frontend (https://lnkd.in/gheC_2pb) draws on an open access repository of articles (https://lnkd.in/gSh2gucH) to link you to the tools you need to transfer your data, from where it lives now to where you want it to go. Today, Data Transfer Initiative released our Trust Model Report, a description of the trust-building necessary to support the paradigm shift in data portability from user download/upload to direct transfer between services, and a Trust Model describing the kinds of questions and evidence suitable for balancing security and user intention without creating undue barriers to access. We've spent the past few months developing this work with the input of a number of stakeholders, and while trust building is a journey, we believe this represents a significant step forward.
