Rakoth – Planeshift
Folk/Black Metal

1. Planeshift (Introduction) - 01:33
2. Fear (Wasn't in the Design) - 05:18
3. Noldor Exodus - 03:58
4. The Dark Heart of Uukrul - 05:05
5. Og'elend - 05:06
6. Planeshift - 06:18
7. Gorthaur Aulendil - 05:34
8. Mountain God - 05:53
9. The Unquiet Grave - 08:17
10. Outro - 01:17

Total: 48:07

Rakoth mixes black metal with folk and does it really, really well. You will hear predominately distorted guitars, clean vocals and piano, mixed wonderfully with blast beats, black metal vocals, acoustic guitars, a flute and synths.
If you like Ulver’s Bergtatt, like other folk/black metal mixes or want to try something new, check it out. You should try it out anyway [face_tongue] Their website contains some samples (though it seems to be down atm). Lovely album.

Highlights: Fear (Wasn't in the Design), The Dark Heart of Uukrul, Planeshift, Mountain God

Deathspell Omega - Kénôse
Black Metal

1. I - 15:45
2. II - 11:25
3. III - 09:09

Total: 36:19

Technically not an album, but that doesn’t matter, since it’s awesome [face_tongue] Though the songs are rather long, they never get boring due to enough variation. They are very dynamic and unpredictable, without losing coherence. Nicely produced while retaining atmosphere, though the exact lyrics are a bit hard to hear.
Black metal enthusiasts, get this.

Wintersun - Wintersun

Jari Maenpaa's new band, after he left Ensiferum, Wintersun is his ultimate creative energy. Combining, folk, black and death metal into it's unique epic and powerful sound, Jari is able to create a breath taking album. Jari does, harsh and clean vocals, backing and lead guitar, bass and keyboard work on this album and Kai Hahto (Rotten Sound) handles the drumming. Mind blowing!

Artist: Exodus
Album: Tempo Of The Damned
Tracklist:
1. Scar Spangled Banner
2. War Is My Shepherd >mp3
3. Blacklist
4. Shroud Of Urine
5. Forward March
6. Culling The Herd
7. Sealed With A Fist
8. Throwing Down
9. Impaler
10. Tempo Of The Damned

"Given up for dead over a decade earlier, the mighty Exodus -- the original kings of thrash metal -- made an unexpected but long-rumored return in 2004 with the release of their sixth studio album, Tempo of the Damned. But what had been intended as a long-awaited reunion of their seminal Bonded By Blood lineup was tragically thwarted with the sudden death of vocalist Paul Baloff in early 2002. Fittingly, Baloff was duly supplanted by none other than Steve "Zetro" Souza, the man who'd replaced him in the first place and who had gone on to sing on every Exodus album thereafter, including their mid-period thrash classic Fabulous Disaster. Of course the fact that Souza was clearly the better and more reliable vocalist (albeit not as fun a character as Baloff) should not be overlooked, and with the welcome involvement of long-gone founding drummer Tom Hunting, Tempo of the Damned still serves as quite the family reunion. It also doesn't disappoint musically, picking up the pieces right where the band's star-crossed career had fallen apart 11 years earlier with the underrated Force of Habit, and turning in a performance that is, at once, vintage Exodus and mindful of modern recording standards as well. All of the old, much loved Exodus hallmarks are here: lyrics filled with biting, sarcastic social commentary; no-fuss, jagged thrash metal; and unparalleled technical precision.

As has always been the case, it's the dazzling six-string tag-team of Rick Hunolt and Gary Holt (quite simply the tightest rhythm guitar duo in the history of thrash -- Slayer included) that truly drives the Exodus bullet train over lightning runs like "Scar Spangled Banner" and the wonderfully retro-named "Impaler." Their solos are as musical as the riffing is not, and, as heard on excellent examples like "Shroud of Urine" and "Forward March," always typified by inventiveness without excess pyrotechnics. About the only deviation from the band's tried and true formula of old comes in the shape of Souza's more varied vocal styles, including a less whiny, wholly uncharacteristic full-throated death roar for the standout "War Is My Shepherd." Tempo of the Damned's second half isn't quite as memorable, the likes of "Sealed With a Fist" and "Throwing Down" suffering from the same sort of aimless riffage that had mired disappointing earlier efforts like Pleasures of the Flesh and Impact Is Imminent, but "Culling the Herd" manages to buck this trend with plenty of fireworks, and the title track still moshes with a vengeance. Taken as a whole, Tempo of the Damned successfully resurrects Exodus as the potent and formidable thrash machine of old. The fact that they are well aware of their strengths, and content to stick with them to the end, is what makes this such a welcome release for the band's loyal followers, as well as younger fans looking to understand what got heavy metal where it is today.

Tracklist:
1. Ultra Motion
2. Torn

5. Ritual
6. Prime-Time Killing
7. The Blackest Day
8. Nothing To Me
9. Fire Power
10. Cold Blooded

"Stoically refusing to move with Metal-trends, ANNIHILATOR report for duty once again with old school-Thrash-influences a la SLAYER and a heavy dose of JUDAS PRIEST and HALFORD thrown in for good measure. Oh and a hint of AC/DC on occasion.

However even with these famous names bagging a ride on the ANNIHILATOR-bus Jeff Waters still has a unique and identifiable sound, which has trademarked his long, long career in the Metal-world.

So what do we get this time around? Basically picking up from last year's excellent "Carnival Diablos" we get more balls to wall-Thrashers like the opener "Ultra Motion", "My Precious Lunatic Asylum", "Cold Blooded" and the HALFORD-sounding "Torn". Waters' guitar-sound is like a buzz saw and whips around at furious pace and on tracks like "Striker" and "Ritual" and "Fire Power" we get treated to classic ANNIHILATOR - furious riffing and that unique guitar sound. Vocally Joe Comeau comes across as a Halford/Tom Araya/Bon Scott-imitator, but his range and voice are perfectly suited for the power and chaos that ANNIHILATOR unfolds.

Play "The Blackest Day" very loudly and you'll get the ANNIHILATOR-message: pounding, bombastic Metal that is sure to get you going! "Nothing To Me" comes across as a follow up to the classic "Shallow Grave" from "Carnival" and if you are not nodding your head to this one…

A couple of bonus-tracks complete the album, a live rendition of last year's "Shallow Grave", where Waters goes all AC/DC on us and a radio edit of "Nothing To Me".

Not as fast as "Carnival…" this is nonetheless an excellent Metal-workout and damn heavy to boot. Many may well question the relevance of Waters in today's over crowded Power Metal/Thrash-arena, but at the end of the day this guy knows how to write and most importantly play so get down to the record shop and support him.

Unless i missed a few post neither of the two albums have been mentioned, which is a poor oversight by the metal community here at IGN.

First up is Scar Symmetry with Pitch Black Progress

Last year, Scar Symmetry’s debut album Symmetric in Design topped my year-end list. Naturally, my expectations were pretty high for this new album, released so shortly after their last album. And I had a weird experience upon first listen, the album didn’t do anything for me, and sounded like they had been listening to too much prog metal. Must’ve been that crack I was smoking, as one or two listens later, the album was on “Repeat”.

They have expanded somewhat on their all-inclusive, modern, melodic death metal sound. Whereas before they sounded a lot like what Soilwork was going for (big solos and synthesizers, choppy riffs, clean/harsh singing), on this album, they stretch out the vocals a bit more. Alvestam’s clean vocal patterns are a bit more power/prog-ish, reminding me of Symphony X in spots, and he adds a harsh bark to go along with his ferocious death growls. Definitely one of the best vocalists in metal today. The song structures are certainly poppy, creating songs with unlimited Headbanger’s Ball potential, but the hooks and guitarwork are so solid that it doesn’t hold them back. A top-notch studio mix can’t hurt either.

The new influences can be heard on songs like “Dreaming 24/7”, where initial shredding turns into a clean guitar/clean vocal verse. Backing grunts add a small margin of testosterone to the chorus which sounds straight out of some of the prog I’ve reviewed here, like Stride and Space Odyssey. The songs seem built around the vocals, as most of the rhythm riffs complement the singing, rather than outshining Alvestam. In this way, some of the transitions can seem awkwards, as listening to a vocal-less copy of this album might leave some people scratching their heads, wondering about some of these abrupt transitions.

“The Illusionist” is the opening track and it enters under atmospheric synths, before kicking into a set of riffs that are instantly identifiable to owners of their last album. A sweet solo comes right where you’d expect it to. “Calculate the Apocalypse” is their heaviest song, with a monstrous opening growl over fearsome drumwork. Loud and boisterous, this song will definitely please the SYL fans. Finishing out our promo (which I think is missing a pair of songs), is the rocking “Path of Least Resistance”. They throw a changeup by pairing a serious throat-scarring chorus with fast and upbeat verses.

Scar Symmetry stay the course set by their stellar debut album, as I’d expect nothing less from a group of metal professionals. Coming from a set of guys with a metal pedigree of Carnal Forge, Theory in Practice, Unmoored, and Centinex, a high level of quality is assured, and they don’t disappoint. They combine many elements of modern metal, but pull it off with a flair and fluidity that few can match.

Next up we have Darkest Hour with Undoing Ruin

I’ve heard it said that this American five-piece is doing “nothing groundbreaking, nothing exciting.” What’s more groundbreaking and exciting in a bloated melodic death scene than a release that stands decapitated head and mangled shoulders above its peers?

The last thing Darkest Hour needs is another critic asking readers to understand that the group isn’t hardcore or metalcore or needlessly addressing the fact that they’re signed to Victory Records, so I’ll describe their sound with the following descriptors: urgent, melodic, refined, passionate, honest, and chock-full of solos. They won’t bore you with elongated seven minute songs with two riffs and punk tendencies either. In fact, the group’s latest release, Undoing Ruin, is eleven songs deep and all of 37 minutes and 48 seconds.

What makes Darkest Hour the definitive melodic death metal band is the fact that the group gives each song a unique characteristic or driving hook. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve listened to an album three times over only to find myself completely lost when coming back to it a week later. Songs will melt into each other to the point where I’ll sit there for a few minutes with one finger just above the play button while I try to figure out which song is which. Not so with Undoing Ruin. “Tranquil” is the pummeling track with the most transitions and the most delicately drawn out solos. Catchy and born from a more traditional songwriting structure, “Convalescence” is where the group finds itself coming as close to a ballad as it probably will in its career without sacrificing any of its integrity. “This Will Outlive Us” proves to be the album’s most solid ode to the Swedish sound Darkest Hour has been accused of cultivating in the past. “Pathos” is the mid-album, all-acoustic session that serves as a welcome break from all of the unrelenting speed. What more could a listener ask for? This is really as diverse as a melodic death recording is going to get without veering in cheesy experimental territory.

Devin Townsend’s production here is on par with his back catalog. His celebrated wall of sound style is as prevalent here as on his latest Strapping Young Lad release. Everything from the twin-guitar attack of Mike Schleibaum and Kris Norris to the frenetic but always fitting drumming of Ryan Parrish is pushed to the forefront without any other elements of the group's sound being cut from the mix. Even without the excellent production, this album would vie for a position in my top ten of the year. The vocals are passionately aggressive, the riffs are memorable, and all of the choruses are superbly crafted. Don’t shy away from this release because you’ve got your dirtied panties in a bunch over metalcore or because you despise the group’s label. At the very least, do yourself a favor; check out a few song samples and challenge your expectations.

Review:
Say what you will about System of a Down, but their 2005 double album Mezmerize/Hypnotize contains some of the most interesting mainstream metal of the new millennium. While System had been lumped in with nu-metal on their last go-around, Toxicity, this album demonstrates just how off that label was. This album contains a little bit of everything, hard rocking songs (B.Y.O.B., Attack, Cigaro, Dreaming...), some ballads (Question, Hypnotize), and some instances of pure absurdity and weirdness (This Cocaine makes Me feel like I'm on this Song). While System may not have the speed and complexity that many of their other peers possess, they more than make up for it with the originality and experimentalism that they commit to disc.

Personal Review;

Sure this band may be Rap Metal, but they do a better job than Limp Bizkit & Co. This debut album is probably the best, however the recent 'Life Will Kill You' is also comparable to this. Clawfinger, are melodic, yet aggressive with there music, and often tackle political and anti-racist themes in their songs. This album is a definate Must Have in a true metal heads collection.

Korn: Issues

Black Label Society: Alcohol Fueled Brewtality

Rob Zombie: Educated Horses

Before I start - I'm 25, play and study guitar. No hendrix but I'm not some emo-kid with a wal-mart guitar running my mouth either. I'm a music lover - no pop - no country - give me some slick guitar playing! My influences include 311, KsE, Metallica, Pomeroy, Cracker, Clapton, Mark Knopfler - all artists that can manipulate the guitar, and where not metal, could be used in metal. Metal is a complex genre that most rarely study on the notation and technique level and that is where I am coming from.

Korn - not metal at all, any level, no matter how you look at it. Look at the tabs and you will one trick drop D ponies.

Rob Zombie - sorry, not metal either. He may have had some roots in inspring some of the bands in this thread to pick up a guitar because of his heavier sound for the times... he just doesn't have the metal feel. I'd call him experimental at this point in the rock genre,

Both of those artists are hard-rock. And anymore, can anyone really stomach anything new from Korn at all?

My personal favorites of the moment album wise:

Bullet For My Valentine: Scream Aim Fire & The Poison
Killswitch Engage - The End of Heartache (Special Edition w/ Live Cuts)
Lamb of God - Killadelphia
Hatebreed - Supremacy
In Flames - Sense of Purpose
In Flames - Reroute to Remain
Metallica - S&M
Dethklok - Dethalbum
All That Remains - Fall of Ideals
Avenged Sevenfold - Avenged Sevenfold

The reason behind Metallica S&M is that it really introduced to me the genere in general. It's a nice change when I'm at work to break up the usual 9 hours of metal with one hour of something melodic. Talk all the #$%& on the album you want, but few can meld this kind of music with an orchestra. Although "Fuel" was horrid the rest of it is a good effort for them to expand their musical horizons.

Killswitch Engage, seen em, hung with em. Great guys that are all about their music. Howard can actually SING which can't be said for a lot of metal artists. I define metal as the playing style and not just unintelligible guitar and some guy going RAWRRR for 72 minutes. I come from a music background and play guitar myself, you have to have structure, melody, lyrics that can be heard, and so on. I really like their cover of Holy Diver by Dio, they gave that song the crunch it needed, and the solo - great fret work!

Which brings me to Dethklok - suprisingly solid tunes throughout. You can clearly hear the stand up playing of guitar AND bass. The instruments flow so well together and shine on a track like "Thunderhorse".

Onto Avenged Sevenfold - I absolutely hated these guys until their latest release. I have ridiculed them up and down and called them talentless. But this album is great - start to finish. Experimental - like a slide guitar on "Dear God" - not my fav song but that's balls for throwing the country flavor into a heavier genere. Loving this album though, it's like the singer took some lessons and doesn't sound like someone squeezing a cat with a cold. The only critique I still have on them is the usual - the blues scale is the back bone of rock music, but climbing up and down the scale and throwing in a bend here and there is not sufficient for an intro when it's been their staple for what - 3 albums now. Diversify. They could take some lessons from Zack Wylde, Bullet for My Valentine, Killswitch Engage and get liberal with some pinch harmonics. Playing fast isn't everything :)

This is a great thread, I'm dling a lot of suggestions that I've seen here to expand my horizons. Glad it's a thread that's here to stay. Keep it going!

btw - noticed blue oyster cult mentioned earlier and a well done on that as well. Good musicians!

Death - Symbolic

"Symbolic" – 6:33
"Zero Tolerance" – 4:48
"Empty Words" – 6:22
"Sacred Serenity" – 4:27
"1,000 Eyes" – 4:28
"Without Judgement" – 5:28
"Crystal Mountain" – 5:07
"Misanthrope" – 5:03
"Perennial Quest" – 8:21

In my opinion, the revolutionary, pioneers of Death Metal, Death's best album. It is simply epic from the beginning song 'till the end. Chuck Schuldiner vocals and guitar work are better than ever. I recommend the tracks Symbolic, Zero Tolerance, 1,000 Eyes and Crystal Mountain (best song).

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Annihilator - Alice In Hell

"Crystal Ann" – 1:40
"Alison Hell" – 5:00
"W.T.Y.D." – 4:56
"Wicked Mystic" – 3:38
"Burns Like a Buzzsaw Blade" – 3:33
"Word Salad" – 5:49
"Schizos (Are Never Alone), Pts. 1 & 2" – 4:32
"Ligeia" – 4:47
"Human Insecticide" – 4:50

The best Canadian Thrash Metal band Annihilator's debut album. The riffs are catchy, the solo's are fast and the lyrics are some of Thrash's finest. I suggest the tracks Alison Hell (best song), Burns Like A Buzzsaw Blade, W.T.Y.D., and Schizos (Are Never Alone), Pts 1 & 2.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Helloween - Keeper Of The Seven Keys, Parts 1 & 2

Part 1:
"Initiation" – 1:21
"I'm Alive" – 3:23
"A Little Time" – 3:59
"Twilight of the Gods" – 4:29
"A Tale That Wasn't Right" – 4:42
"Future World" – 4:02
"Halloween" – 13:18
"Follow the Sign" – 1:46

The best part (in my opinion) of Helloween's two part album. Kai Hansen's guitar work, is incredible and Micheal Kiske's vicals are just as good, if not better. Every single track on this part are some of Power Metal's finest, but the best one is undoubtedly the epic 13 minute long Halloween track (best song, duh).

Part 2:
"Invitation" – 1:06
"Eagle Fly Free" – 5:08
"You Always Walk Alone" – 5:08
"Rise and Fall" – 4:22
"Dr. Stein" – 5:03
"We Got the Right" – 5:07
"Save Us" – 5:12
"March of Time" – 5:13
"I Want Out" – 4:39
"Keeper of the Seven Keys" – 13:38

Not as awesome as the first part but still friggin' sweet. I suggest Eagle Fly Free, You Always Walk Alone and Keeper Of The Seven Keys (best song).

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sepultura - Beneath the Remains

1. "Beneath the Remains" - 5:11
2. "Inner Self" - 5:07
3. "Stronger Than Hate" - 5:50
4. "Mass Hypnosis" - 4:22
5. "Sarcastic Existence" - 4:43
6. "Slaves of Pain" - 4:00
7. "Lobotomy" - 4:55
8. "Hungry" - 4:28
9. "Primitive Future" - 3:08
10. "A Hora E A Vez Do Cabelo Nascer" - 2:23
11. "Inner Self" - 5:11
12. "Mass Hypnosis" - 4:22

Beneath The Remains is the best album by the best Brazilian band in the history of Heavy Metal. Max Cavalera's vocals are sick and so is Kisser's guitar work. I suggest the tracks Beneath The Remains (best song), Stronger Than Hate, Hungry, Mass Hypnosis, Slaves Of Pain and Lobotomy. Yep, this is one great album.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Megadeth - Rust In Peace

"Holy Wars... The Punishment Due" – 6:32
"Hangar 18" – 5:14
"Take No Prisoners" – 3:26
"Five Magics" – 5:40
"Poison Was the Cure" – 2:56
"Lucretia"– 3:56
"Tornado of Souls" – 5:19
"Dawn Patrol" – 1:51
"Rust in Peace... Polaris" – 5:44

The best Thrash Metal album of all time, says this guy. Dave Mustaine's vocals are sharp and Marty Friedman's guitar work is unbelievable. I suggest the songs Hangar 18, Holy Wars... The Punishment Due (best song), Lucretia, Rust In Peace... Polaris and Tornado Of Souls.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Slayer - Reign In Blood

1. "Angel of Death" - 4:51
2. "Piece by Piece" - 2:02
3. "Necrophobic" - 1:40
4. "Altar of Sacrifice" - 2:50
5. "Jesus Saves" - 2:54
6. "Criminally Insane" - 2:23
7. "Reborn" - 2:11
8. "Epidemic" - 2:23
9. "Postmortem" - 3:27
10. "Raining Blood" - 4:15

Holy freaking crap, all Metalheads HAVE to love this album. Slayer is so awesome and so talented, from the beginning's incredibly high scream in Angel Of Death, to Kerry Kings guitar work on Raining Blood. I suggest the tracks Angel Of Death (best song), Necrophobic, Jesus Saves, Criminally Insane, Postmortem and Raining Blood.

Pantera:
Far Beyond Driven

1- Strength Beyond Strength – 3:38
2- Becoming – 3:05
3- 5 Minutes Alone – 5:47
4- I'm Broken – 4:24
5- Good Friends and a Bottle of Pills – 2:53
6- Hard Lines, Sunken Cheeks – 7:01
7- Slaughtered – 3:56
8- 25 Years – 6:05
9- Shedding Skin – 5:36
10- Use My Third Arm – 4:51
11- Throes of Rejection – 5:01
12- Planet Caravan (Black Sabbath Cover) – 4:03

Musically, Far Beyond Driven was devoid of nearly all the Thrash Metal influences Pantera had on their previous three albums, settling for a continuous, slow chugging mid tempo groove throughout the album. Much of the shift was due to Dimebag Darrell's more down-tuned and heavier sludgy playing styles. Anselmo's lyrics on the album were far more personal than on the previous albums, his lyrics of "You'll never be the father I am" may shed some light on his personal life.

Wow, just the description of the band has already let me know they suck and aren't worth the listen.

But thanks anyway Street Teamer, your services are duly noted and chuckled at.

The description let me know they were nowhere near metal. So I failed to care since the post was off-topic

Flicked through this thread again for first time in years, will add an album i am honestly quite shocked to have not seen represented.

Morbid Angel - Altars of Madness (1989)

[image=http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/2/23/MorbidAngelAltars.jpg]

1.Immortal Rites
2.Suffocation
3.Visions from the Dark Side
4.Maze of Torment
5.Lord of all Fevers and Plagues
6.Chapel of Ghouls
7.Bleed for the Devil
8.Damnation
9.Blasphemy
10.Evil Spells

Without a doubt one of Death Metal's strongest pioneering LP's, and a huge influence on things to come. The lineup for this album featured Pete Sandoval on drums, Trey Azagthoth & Richard Brunelle on guitar, and David Vincent on bass/vocals. The drumming here is flawless, not overly dominating or giving a pure onslaught of blast beating - but as far as percussion goes this is about as menacing as it comes. In my opinion David Vincents vocals would develop more in the coming years of the band, and whilst i don't rate any other MA album as highly as Altars, i feel his performance on Covenant was stronger. Nonetheless, Vincents guttural, snarling barks are more than sufficient to keep up with the tempo here.
Hats off for the guitar work though, every riff sounds like it is being strangled by a thick fog of pure evil. Treys solo's have become a trademark of the band since. I wouldn't say this was the most brutal album of the time, and probably not the fastest (though its not far off). However, the evil that comes out of this record reminds me how it all started, and the elements that got me interested in this music in the first place. A must-have.

Then you need to listen to more music. That's not even Metallica's best.
Let alone metal in general, as Metallica isn't even close to the best of the genre.

And Metal doesn't even compare to numerous classical pieces, so what the hell?

It's kind of funny how most of the albums in this thread can easily be passed up without really missing anything special.
