Valheim Biome Progression Guide
Not sure which biome you should explore first? We have listed the following biomes in the order in which you should visit them. The following rankings have all been determined based on the resources they have to offer, along with the creatures and bosses that you will fight along the way.
Easiest - Meadows Biome
The Meadows biome is the first biome you will encounter when spawning into the world of Valheim.
As its lush grassy meadows, flowing rivers, and rolling hills are home to relatively harmless Greylings, Necks, and Boars, the Meadows biome is by far the safest biome you will experience in Valheim.
Easy - Black Forest Biome
The second biome that we recommend visiting is the Black Forest. Complete with large hills, exposed rock, a mixture of pine and fir trees, and several powerful enemies, the Black Forest is considered the second easiest biome that you will encounter.
The Black Forest is also the point at which your character begins making considerable upgrades to the likes of Bronze.
Medium Difficulty - Swamp Biome
The third biome that you should consider visiting is the Swamp. Complete with large - often fallen - trees, fire geysers, Sunken Crypts, and some of the more challenging creatures you'll have encountered so far, the Swamp is definitely one of the more formidable locations you'll encounter during your mid-game experience.
Considered the third hardest biome, the Swamp is a turning point in the game, as resources such as Scrap Iron will make for essential gear progression as you begin to upgrade your tools, armor, and weapons into more viable and durable items.
Challenging - Mountains
The fourth biome that we recommend visiting is the Mountains. Complete with large ice-covered mountain tops, obsidian, silver ore, and some of the more difficult late-game creatures that you'll encounter, as there's no denying that the Mountains biome is one of the more unforgiving locations within the game.
Do keep in mind though, the Mountains are one of those late-game biomes that you should only explore once you are fully prepared with all of the correct armor, weapons, and tools that are needed to successfully explore the area. With the right gear and items needed, your chance of surviving the harsh conditions is slim to none.
More Challenging - Plains Biome
The fifth biome that we recommend visiting is the Plains. Complete with large rolling hills and sparse trees, the Plains biome is home to large rock structures and dangerous Fuling villages that will really put you and your fellow Vikings to the challenge.
Despite its rather serene appearance, the Plains are far more challenging compared to previous biomes. If you're planning to visit the Plains, be sure to bring your best gear and plenty of potions, as your frequent encounters with Fulings, Deathsquitos, and even the rather harmless looking Lox, will test every skill that you have learned so far.
Most Challenging - Mistlands Biome
As soon as you set foot in the sixth Valheim biome, the Mistlands, you'll be surrounded by a thick fog. Due to the limited vision and extremely dangerous enemies, most notably the massive, bug-like Seekers, the Mistlands are the most challenging biome and should be visited last.
Try to get your hands on a Wisplight as soon as possible, and keep an eye out for green-glowing Ancient Roots and Dvergr settlements, as they are key to uncovering the Mistlands' secrets. If you want, the Mistlands offer a chance to try your hand at wielding magic, which unlocks a brand-new skillset.
The Deep Blue - Ocean Biome
The ocean biome can be found when you're sailing from island to island. It is home to Fishes, Serpents, and Leviathans. This biome is still underdeveloped and the developers have said that they will expand it in future updates. The Ocean should only be explored when you have a raft, Karve, or a Longship.
