Basics
Like its predecessor on the original Wii system, New Super Mario Bros. U lets four players move together through the Mushroom Kingdom, either by helping or impeding one another.
The game can be either played by the Wii U Gamepad or the wii remote (sideways)
The actual map screen is more akin to Super Mario World, with more branching paths and dozens of levels across one world map. Players can look around the map at any time. In addition to standard levels, there are mid-world fortresses guarded by Boom-Booms as well as end-level Koopaling boss castles.
In addition to standard level gameplay, New Super Mario Bros. U also features 3 extra modes:
- In Boost Rush, players are put in a set of 2 or 3 autoscrolling levels littered with coins. The goal is to collect as many coins as you can, though doing so will increase the stage's scrolling speed. Though this mode can only be played in multiplayer, you can watch replays of your latest attempts alone on your own time.
- In Challenge Mode, players are given specific tasks to complete in order to test their skills in 2D platforming. Challenges include Time Attack, 1-Up Rally, and much more, in both single player and multiplayer experiences.
- In Coin Battle, up to four players can compete in teams of two to try to get the most coins. A fifth player can use the GamePad to help the other players in Boost Mode, or they can place coins wherever they want in Coin Edit.
Players can use the Wii U's Miiverse functionality to leave advice or share challenges if their Wii U is connected to the Nintendo Network. The game is also confirmed to feature Spotpass, though exactly what content can be acquired via Spotpass has yet to be revealed.
Lastly, New Super Mario Bros. U features off-TV play, using the GamePad.
