Gear
Although stocking up on some strong weapons will do a lot for Aiden's chances of survival, he'll also need armour to protect him from the hordes of infected. As such, it's best to keep an eye out for new gear, the likes of which can offer Aiden additional damage resistance, key buffs and a stylish new look. Similar to weapons, gear is randomized, meaning you'll never find the same loot twice and it doesn't respawn.
Every piece of gear is slotted into one of six categories – headgear, chest piece, gloves, sneakers, bracers or joggers – and is fitted for an individual class. In total, there are four classes: Tank, which specialises in absorbing and dealing lots of damage at the expense of speed. Brawler, which focuses on a mix of speed and damage output. Ranger, which mostly focuses on agility over damage. And Medic, which specialises in healing abilities.
If you're playing in multiplayer, you may choose to align your gear heavily with one class. However, you can also mix and match items to ensure your version of Aiden is as well-rounded as possible.
Where to Find Gear
Much like weapons, gear can be found in several different locations. The easiest way to track down new articles of clothing is to look for GRE containers. These can be found in GRE trailers (check out our Artifact Weapons Guide for help tracking those down) as well as in Dark Zones, Military Convoys, Bandit Camps, Metro Tunnels, and most other side activities. GRE containers can also appear while on missions.
Gear can be acquired at vendors too, with shopkeepers charging you high prices for some of the best gear in the game. Unlike weapons, you don't receive gear as a reward for completing quests, however, gear should spawn at higher rates while exploring the map and items of clothing don't break like weapons.
Gear Classes
As mentioned earlier, there are four gear classes and each will come with its own unique buffs. Tank gear will mostly offer you offence based stat increases, including boosted damage (especially with two-handed weapons) and higher damage resistance. The drawback is they often lower your overall stamina.
Ranger gear, on the other hand, will see your ranged damage increase, while it'll also provide buffs that up your stamina and improve your parkour, survivor senses and other non-combat abilities. Meanwhile, a piece of brawler gear focuses on a mix of boosted damage (usually with one-handed weapons), increased damage resistance and stamina regeneration, although its stats won't be as high as either the Tank or Ranger classes.
Finally, the Medic class gets bonuses for parkour damage and stamina regeneration, while also getting buffs focused around their health regeneration speed and damage resistance.
