What is whey protein?

Whey is one of two protein sources derived from cheese production. Whey is the liquid portion left over, while casein protein becomes the solid (curds). The liquid whey is then dried to form a protein powder that can be used in smoothies, recipes, oatmeal and more! These solids go on to create all the dairy goodness we know and love (hello cheese).

 

What types of whey protein are there?

Whey protein powders come in three different forms:

Whey Protein Concentrate – contains 70-80% protein. The remaining 20-30% is a mixture of carbohydrates and fat.

Whey Protein Isolate – contains 90-95% protein. The majority of the naturally occurring carbohydrates (including lactose, a.k.a. milk sugar) and fat are removed to amp up the protein factor.

Whey Protein Hydrolysate – In whey protein hydrolysate, the proteins have been “hydrolyzed”, meaning it’s been partially broken down through an enzymatic process. These hydrolyzed proteins are absorbed more rapidly than an “intact” or non-hydrolyzed protein.

 

How do I use whey protein?

Whey protein supplements are a convenient (and delicious) way to boost protein intake.

Don’t let all the benefits to athletes fool you into thinking that whey protein is only for bodybuilders. Protein helps keep you feeling fuller longer, and it supports the maintenance of lean muscle mass, making it an excellent addition to any healthy routine. You can mix it with milk or water in a shaker cup for a great protein shake or get creative by using it in smoothies, protein pancakes, oatmeal, or protein bites.
