Youniqx partners with Nok Nok Labs to boost eID security in Europe with biometrics

Austrian company Youniqx Identity AG has signed a strategic partnership with Nok Nok Labs to equip eID systems in Europe with FIDO-certified multi-factor authentication using biometrics or physical tokens for both mobile and web-based applications, the company announced.

Under the partnership, a new eID system will be implemented by European state Liechtenstein, which is giving up on its current smartcard, username and password-based e-ID solution for a more secure password one, in compliance with eIDAS regulation.

The contract is for Youniqx adapted MIA (My Identity App) system built in compliance with FIDO standards and with features and functionality provided by the Nok Nok S3 Authentication Suite (Nok Nok S3 Suite). The FIDO integration will deliver enhanced security and a more efficient user experience, the company says, while Nok Nok’s S3 Authentication Suite, SDKs and SaaS offerings will empower users to benefit from the biometric authentication technology available on their devices.

“For our customers, we only use the most secure products on the market that meet their requirements. Nok Nok perfectly aligns within our product portfolio and we are proud of the very trusted partnership,” says Lukas Praml, CEO of YOUNIQX.

“Historically we have seen security standards implemented in Europe leading to what the rest of the world eventually adopts. To be working with YOUNIQX is a privilege,” said Philip Dunkelberger, CEO of Nok Nok Labs. “Nok Nok is pleased to assist YOUNIQX to implement for their customers an authentication solution that easily integrates into their portfolio, that provides a stronger security profile, and supports biometric authentication based on the globally accepted FIDO standards.”

Liechtenstein is part of the European Economic Area (EEA), so it must abide by the Consultation Report on the adoption of the European eIDAS (electronic identification) regulation.

Youniqx is a subsidiary of OeSD (Austrian State Printing House), the company responsible with developing biometric passports in partnership with Vision-Box. Youniqx delivers secure digital identity management solutions for a number of organizations around the world, and develops other production-proofed technologies and open standards such as OpenID Connect.
