The ANA's CEO, Bob Liodice, issued the following statement in response to President Joe Biden's State of the Union Address on Tuesday, February 7, 2023.

We share President Biden’s desire to enact strong national data privacy legislation (Republicans and Democrats, Unite Against Big Tech Abuses, Jan. 11, 2023) and have been advocating for legislation to do just that.

Washington, D.C. (July 20, 2022) - Today the House Energy and Commerce Committee voted to advance the American Data Privacy and Protection Act (ADDPA) out of Committee. ANA’s EVP & Head of Government Relations, Christopher Oswald, reacted with the following statement:

Washington, D.C. – New research validates the powerful impact of advertising in driving the U.S. economy. A new study, commissioned by The Advertising Coalition and conducted by IHS Markit, found that advertising generated $7.1 trillion in sales activity and supported 28.5 million U.S. jobs last year.

ANA applauds the passage of the Postal Reform Act of 2022, designed to make the United States Postal Service’s operations more financially stable and sustainable.

ANA has urged the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to deny a petition to ban or limit “surveillance advertising.”

The Association of National Advertisers (ANA) today expressed its continued opposition to regulations implementing the Digital Advertising Gross Revenues Tax.

Highlights Include: Senate Commerce held its first privacy hearing of this Congress. Rohit Chopra was approved by the Senate to head the CFPB. Ashkan Soltani was named Executive Director of the CPPA in California. The FTC sent numerous notices, including on deceptive endorsements and dark patterns. The FTC also held a meeting on internet service providers and privacy. Jessica Rosenworcel was named Chair of the FCC by President Biden.

Highlights Include: The Maryland Comptroller released proposed regulations for the State’s digital advertising tax. The House E&C Committee held a markup on a proposed FTC privacy bureau and a billion dollars in corresponding funding. Minnesota held a hearing on a privacy bill for next year and another privacy bill was prefiled in Oklahoma. The Senate turns its attention to privacy, holding several hearings and sending letters to FTC Chair Kahn. ANA held its annual Capitol Hill Day where ANA staff guided members as they met with the offices of key members on the House E&C and Senate Commerce Committees.

Highlights Include: Sen. Blackburn (R-TN) called for the overhaul of COPPA during a Commerce Committee hearing. Google blocked the targeting of ads based on age and gender, among other demographics. The U.K. sought views on a new data transfer agreement and decided on a post-Brexit overhaul of their privacy rules.

Highlights Include: SCOTUS ruled against a California donor disclosure requirement. ANA and non profit federation field comments opposing a postal rate increase. ANA urged the Senate Commerce Committee to create 13(b) legislation that is workable. The Colorado governor signed his state's privacy law. Two Senate Commerce Republicans (Wicker & Blackburn) introduced a new privacy law.
