This is the mini-review I originally posted to social media, re-posted here in its entirety:
Even though I first played the original FF7 ten years after it came out, that was still over fourteen years ago. Despite loving it at the time, I only remember the broad strokes (and sometimes not even that).
What Square Enix has done with Remake, and especially now with Rebirth is nothing short of amazing. It's set across several open world land masses I'd call medium-sized by today's standards, each with plenty of new enemy types, companion quests, and mini-games. The mini-games alone could merit an entire review, and often have questlines of their own. The combat never got old for me, with a constant reward feedback loop that improves characters in multiple ways.
The story is easy to follow; until the end, when it kind of goes all-out nuts, Kingdom Hearts style. Loved it.
