Great product, awesome sound, chock full of features!

Great product, awesome sound, chock full of features!
Let me start by saying that several months ago after they first came out I bought the PTM-33 Four Channel IEMs unit For my band.We are a techie band and are continually upgrading our equipment and technology. For purposes of this review I was using the Soundcraft UI 24 digital soundboard, Sennheiser XS wireless microphones, Multiple SM-58 microphones, and both wired and wireless bass and guitar connections. Also at the same time the four channel PTM-10 Wireless IEM system. We are a five piece band and previously we upgraded to the PTM–133 wireless IEMs from wired IEMs (you can see part of it in the picture) . As for us it is very important for each band member to have their own individual mix which they can adjust on the fly as needed not sharing a single “house” mix.I am the drummer and therefore stationary when I play LOL and so is the keyboardist so a wired connection was not a problem. However after reading the reviews and wanting to round out all wireless IEM’s for all band members, and have to deal with one less wire, I decided to buy this system so we are entirely wireless for IEMs.It is definitely a step up in that it’s stereo is a very nice addition.I tested it rehearsing with the band with multiple wireless microphones and four other wireless IEM units ( PTM-33) and Wireless Instrument connections and we had zero issues with connectivity, latency, sound quality, or drop out due to issues in the wireless spectrum.I was actually quite surprised as the environment we practice and also has quite a strong Internet Wi-Fi ( access point on ceiling above) and the soundboard which is the Soundcraft UI 24 has its own onboard Wi-Fi as well.We experienced no issues this was a very big positive. There are a ton more channels to choose from on this unit than the PTM-33 but I found I really didn’t need to mess with that much as I had a solid signal from the get-go.With regards to stereo versus mono I tested them both.Previously when we were wired we listened to a mono mix as the instruments are largely mono and we divide the keys and electronic drums Into two channels. We were simply panning everything in the middle to get an even mono mix with the other instruments divided however there was not much of a divide. Additionally with the arrays we play live with we find even splitting out vocals and panning the instruments gives us a different effect and can sometimes have phase shifting etc. That’s a little too much detail lol (But trying to help illustrate our setup)I tested it both with quarter inch TRS and XLR inputsAnd both in mono and stereo and could not discern a difference in cable type on either.Don’t get me wrong the stereo is awesome! You just need to be set up for it and used to it. My guess is unless you were actively touring you were probably working more in a mono world even everybody having their own mix is a bit sophisticated as well. However if you’re looking at a stereo type unit then you know what it is and what it brings to the sound.I’ve been working in mono world for a long time so stereo it was a very pleasant change but, would stress that people need to understand what getting a proper feed and stereo really means on the input. Stereo is awesome though :)The PTM-10 It is chock-full of features that the PTM–33 does not have. The individual balance is really cool you don’t have to do it on your mix which is handy having it on the body pack. The limiter and lock functions I tried but honestly don’t use.The lock function I don’t use as it is going to lock in a frequency and I don’t want to forget that it’s there in case I change frequencies on the fly.The limiter function seems interesting, However it’s really for loud playing and even though I’m a drummer I try not to crush my ears so I can’t say that I’ve fully realize the potential of that feature. However the future I do love the most is the EQ function. It is a simple on/off setting which I thought it would be an equalizer with various mhz bands however, but it’s an on/off.( you can see in a picture) I was a bit skeptical at first but I really like what it does to the tone. I don’t know how to better explain it then equating it to the magic button when editing a photo. It just makes the music sound better :-).In general it seems like the body pack has the same clip as the other unit, but the body pack itself is more substantial and feels a bit more solid.People have complained about the clips and other reviews I’ve read, yes they are a bit flimsy, we haven’t had any problems yet however we are largely not moving these too often they are kind of “permanently” clipped on the guitar and bass straps and the rest of us clip them on our belts at each session.Again if you were actively touring you would probably have the body packs in a small case as you see with any other professional band. Also I forgot to mention it comes in a nice padded custom fit case which is really nice. ( Included in a picture)I love when equipment comes with proper carrying cases.I haven’t had any trouble with either unit so I don’t have any experience with Tech Support with Phenyx Pro however I can tell you this is the second piece of equipment that I bought from them in the endeavor to get my band fully wireless it has not let us down. It does come with a one-year warranty so that will be there in the future should we need it.In summary it’s a great unit with awesome sound, lots of features, and plenty of channels to choose from.I’m always happy to answer any questions if you should have any.

Wow, is this unit ever amazing! When you consider the cost, it's a no-brainer. I've used several units by the competition and this unit holds its own in every way.

    Pros:

It's stereo! For some, this may not matter but I personally love the flexibility of having a stereo IEM unit. For one I can monitor the true output of the mixer. Having stereo capabilities also makes it possible to have a custom monitor mix that just wouldn't be possible in mono. For example, I personally like to have guitars in my left ear and vocals in my right. This would not be possible with a mono unit.

It can just as easily run in mono if you prefer!

The unit runs in the 900 frequency range which isn't used nearly as much as most of the completion which either runs in the 500's or even worse, 2.4k! This makes finding and maintaining a good connection easy and seamless.

IR Sync between the transmitter and receiver! I can't express enough how useful of a feature this is. It makes setup super fast and easy but even more important, should you have issues during the show it makes scanning in a new frequency fast and easy.

Besides those reasons above it looks great, it's rack-mountable, and comes with EVERYTHING you need to get up and running right in the box!

    Cons:

The backpack is made of plastic. While this is true I have found it holds up well to abuse and even withstood some drop tests!

No auto-scan for frequencies. This unit will not scan to find the best frequency but I personally have found when working in the 900hZ range, this is rarely an issue. 900 is not very common so you're not really going to have much competition for frequencies. Also, the cost of this unit is SIGNIFICANTLY less than the competition so they had to save costs in some places. I for one would rather lose auto scan and keep the rock-solid connectivity and ease of use. I would rather have a solid unit that I know I can count on than have the convenience of auto-scan.

As I said above, this unit is a no-brainer! I love Phenyx Pro and use their products across my live work and I work with audio for a living. So I'm using this gear in professional settings with paying clients and just like my other Phenyx Pro gear, it's never let me down or disappointed. I'm a massive fan of Phenyx Pro and will continue to support them. I wish more companies would have this way of thinking. They care about their users and give us the best possible products without breaking the bank. I highly recommend the PTM-10 and furthermore, any products Phenyx Pro makes. You really can't go wrong!

Size: Four receiver plus one transmitterVerified Purchase
The PTM-10 is a solid wireless in-ear monitoring system that is both reliable and budget-friendly. This system includes four bodypack receivers and a complete rack mounting kit. I had the opportunity to thoroughly test the PTM-10 over the last few months, both at home, during rehearsals, and live performances. While I've had a positive experience overall, I do believe that there are a few key areas where the PTM-10 could be improved.

Let's start with the good news. The transmitter unit and bodypacks performed exceptionally well and seem quite durable. The bodypacks were effortless to sync with the transmitter unit, and I encountered almost no signal dropouts or interference during my use. This is especially impressive given the presence of other wireless units and cell phones in the vicinity, which bodes well for utilizing this system on the road. Additionally, the range of the PTM-10 is outstanding. I was able to walk all the way up my driveway while the transmitter was set up on one side of my house before I started experiencing any signal drops, which is roughly twenty times the distance I would ever be from the unit during an actual performance. Moreover, the sound quality was generally crystal-clear, effectively conveying the mix that I had dialed in.

On to the not-so-great aspects. First and foremost, the interface for both the transmitter and bodypacks is perplexing and difficult to navigate. With minimal buttons and an unusual tap-and-hold or quick tap scheme to access various commands and features, setting up both the transmitters and receivers was trying and incredibly frustrating. Moreover, the manual is pretty sparse and not very helpful, but thankfully Phenyx Pro provides a video tutorial/walkthrough that fills in many of the gaps.

Secondly, the stereo function of the PTM-10 is problematic. After successfully configuring it to stereo mode, I discovered a persistent hiss that was quite noticeable. Despite going through the various EQ functions and adjusting the mix in my DAW, the issue was still present. On a whim, I changed the unit from stereo mode to mono, which essentially eliminated the hiss. While I'm not sure what caused this problem, it seems that others have had similar experiences.

Despite the drawbacks, I do recommend the PTM-10, especially when you consider its reasonable price point and the consistently excellent customer support from Phenyx Pro. However, it does require some time and patience to set up properly, and the user interface can be very challenging to navigate. Additionally, the stereo function falls short of expectations, but I found that having a stereo mix in my ears isn't particularly crucial. Nonetheless, it's worth keeping these caveats in mind.

Recommendations: The stock earbuds/headphones that come with this unit sound very tinny and do not do a great job of attenuating noise, which if you play live with a full band means you’re not going to be able to hear your IEM mix whatsoever. So if you plan on getting this unit, also plan on getting a nicer set of sound isolating earphones/earbuds. Also, while the unit does have 4 body packs, it’s all sharing one single mix, so if you and your bandmates have very specific monitoring needs, I’d suggest just getting a separate unit for everyone (we purchased the PTM-22 and that has proven to be a fantastic addition to our live IEM setup).

The first unit I purchased had an issue with changing channels on my receiver and contacted the customer service via Facebook and they responded within 24 hrs with some troubleshooting suggestions. Unfortunately, all steps didn’t clear the issue so I returned the first one and ordered a second one and it worked as it should. Sometimes you get a dud from the factory but all is good with the return policy and the new unit has been working perfectly for over a month now. At this price point, this is a great sounding unit (upgraded in ears) is a must
Our drummer spent a small fortune on his system and tried out mine and was flown away. Our other guitarist bought one the very next day.
    UPDATE:
After re-ordering a second unit, it worked fine up until today (March 08 2023) and now the receiver display just stopped working. I can’t see anything at all. I wasn’t just the back light. LED display is completely dark. I can’t change frequencies or adjust anything except power and volume. The receiver still works and produces sound but lost all adjustments without the display. Waiting to hear back from customer support to see what will happen next. More to follow.

4.0 out of 5 stars MUY BUENO

Works flawlessly, you have a good distance before you loose signal. The sounds his great, 3 possibled adjustment. I use it for practice and show. Can be strero or two pack mono. It's a great buy
