Purpose
The purpose of the Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center (RERC) program is to improve the effectiveness of services authorized under the Rehabilitation Act by conducting advanced engineering research and development of innovative technologies designed to solve particular rehabilitation problems or remove environmental barriers.
RERCs also demonstrate and evaluate such technologies, facilitate service delivery systems changes, stimulate the production and distribution of equipment in the private sector, and provide training opportunities to enable individuals (including individuals with disabilities) to become researchers and practitioners of rehabilitation technology. Awards are normally made for a five-year period.
How to Apply
- Eligible applicants are states; public or private agencies, including for-profit agencies; public or private organizations, including for-profit organizations; institutions of higher education; and Indian Tribes and Tribal organizations
- Two ways to search and locate RERC funding opportunities exist.
- Go to Grants.Gov. The Search Grants' page will appear in your web browser. Type *RERC* in the Keyword(s) Search text box. Be sure to surround the word RERC in asterisks as above. Then click the Search button. All Forecasted and Posted RERC funding opportunities will be displayed on screen. After executing this search by pressing the "Search button", no results may appear. If that happens, make sure the "closed" and "archived" checkboxes are also checked. You should now see all "closed" and all "archived" RERC funding opportunity announcements. You may want to change the sorting order of the results. To do this locate the sort by drop-down box near the top of the page. Change the sort options to suit your needs. For example, you may want to see the results sorted in descending order (with most recent date first) by "Close Date". Make sure the choice in the drop-down box reads "Close Date (Descending)". Then click the "Update Sort" button located to the right of drop-down box. Now the results should be displayed with most recent closed date listed at the top of the list. Once satisfied with the results you see on your screen, you may want to save the search results. To save your results, locate the "Export Results" hyperlink at the top right of your screen. Left-click on the link. And after a few moments,a "Downloads Open or Save As" window or pop-up should appear, depending on the internet browser. Left click the "Save As" choice. Then a "Save As" window appears. You may wish to rename the default file name to a filename that is something easier to remember. Leave the "Save As type" box alone as Microsoft Excel Comma Separated Values. Then click "Save" the file to your computer. Finally, remember the location. Navigate to the file and double-click on it. It will open in Excel automatically. Then left-click "File>>Save As" and make sure the drop-down down box reads "Excel Workbook (xlsx)". Finally save the file.
- Go the ACL.gov's Funding Opportunities' Landing Page. At the top of the page, ensure the Sort by Program drop-down menu shows NIDILRR. Then click apply.

- RERCs are national centers of excellence. Grantees in the RERC Program must provide technical assistance and consultations that are responsive to concerns of service providers and consumers.

Results-Oriented Highlights
- RERCs generate new knowledge that informs the construction of new, or the modification of existing, standards in the field of disability and rehabilitation. Think of standards as a formula that describes the best way of doing something. Two examples of RERC work and contributions to standards include but are not limited to:
- RERCs also develop technology-related products that are designed to help people with disabilities do something better than they did before, or make something easier or quicker to do, than it was before. - The Trace Center at the University of Maryland, and formerly at the University of Wisconsin at Madison, has been a long-standing funded NIDILRR RERC grantee for many years. View a historical and chronological timeline of all of the technology-related products that the Trace Center has produced, largely, though not exclusively, with NIDILRR funding. A 2022 book called Technology and Disability 50 Years of Trace R&D Center Contributions and Lessons Learned has also been produced. This book is available on Amazonin Kindle, hardcopy, and paperbackformats.
