The Witcher: Monster Slayer divides the types of creatures one can fight into 3 tiers: common, rare, and legendary. Rewards are obtained after a certain number of wins against each group. Prior to patch v1.2 the rewards were in form of skill points, now they come in coins and crystals.

Monster levels and ballpark difficulty[]

Levels of monsters have been introduced after patch 1.2, which also made all commons 'easy', all rares 'yellow skull' and all legendaries 'red skull'. The monster level depends on your level, so the first number is researched at character level 36 and the latter at level 40, which is the more stable comparison point. It seems that between character levels 36 and 40, monster levels grow by 2 levels,

As a rule of thumb, after patch v1.2 (looking at it from level 36),

  • commons are all trivial to kill (at least with Manticore armor strong/fast vulnerabilities can also be ignored),
  • rare creatures cannot be killed without Thunderbolt (+200% attack damage, brew cost 50 coins including repair cost) and
  • legendary creatures require Thunderbolt and Swift (+50% HP, brew cost another 50 coins).

Exceptions exist mostly to the hard direction (such as elementals), and with wolven or potentially manticore swords we have seen reports that killing easy rares is possible without potions as well with ignis and perfectly timed crits which both delay their next attack.

Bestiary as a coin and crystal mine[]

Before patch 1.2 winning against common creatures granted a skill point after 3 wins, 50, and 150. Winning against rare creatures granted a skill point after 2 wins, 10, and 30. Winning against legendary creatures granted a skill point after 1 win, again after another 2 and after another 6.

After patch 1.2, bestiary levels no longer award skill points, instead:

  • commons grant coins on average after every 10 kills until (eventually) completed,
  • rares grant 5 crystals after on average 7 kills, and
  • legendaries grant 10 crystals after on average 5 kills.

First reward is gained after 1 kills, second after 2, until the 'on average' level is finally reached and stays stable after that. However, as noted above, rare and legendary creatures generally cost potions to kill, which means they cost coins to kill. How does this translate in terms of crystal value?

If we look at the Bestiary as a conversion system between coins spent for alchemy and gems from rare and legendary skills, and estimate that 1 potion might provide enough time to klil 2 rares or 1 legendary on a lucky day, we can estimate a coin worth of a crystal to be on average (7/2*50/5)= 35 coins per crystal ('2 rares 1 potion') or 5*(2*50)/10 = 50 coins per crystal ('1 legendary needs 2 potions').

You can make 50 ( ingredients) + minimum 60*3 (daily tasks) = 230 "free" coins a day, and can therefore afford to use slightly over 4 potions a day to generate crystals, statistically netting 6 crystals a day if you do not need to save up coins any more. Gaining the ability to kill some rares with e.g. Wolven (or Manticore) sword and Manticore armor using no potions is worth approximately 1/7 crystals or 5 coins every kill. Killing commons grants you 10 coins per 10 kills so you can 'mine' for additional coins until the bestiary is depleted without per day limitations. Oils cost 45 coins each (bear fat and repair costs alone), so they are not particularly great for crystal mining. Both oils and potions can be gained from Witcher Packs shared between players to grant more daily crystal mining opportunities to the frugal post-patch-1.2 Witcher.

Lammas Celebration Monsters[]

In August 2022 players could collect trophys of 5 seasonal monsters: Bloody Fields, Scareman, Harrower, Mulcher and Swarm Mother. Since the monsters can't be found after the event has ended, completing the entire bestiary is impossible for players who have missed the event or registered after August 2022.
