Marcello Clerici (d. 1274) was a knight from Toussaint.
Biography[]
Marcello was born in a poor village in Toussaint and where he grew up with Pinastri, a girl of a similar age that he fell in love with. However, Pinastri was always feeling down and, believing it was because they were poor, he decided to run off to Beauclair and become a knight, taking Pinastri with him in hopes that'd make her happier. However, the nobles were no better than poor peasants and disheartened, Pinastri left.
Still trying to show his love for her, Marcello then entered the annual knight's tournament to win in Pinastri's name. However his horse, Blaze, suddenly bucked the knight off during a match, causing him to lose. In his anger, Marcello then proceeded to whip the horse to death, not aware Pinastri saw all this. Angry at Marcello for killing an innocent creature, Pinastri ran off and refused to speak to him again.
After Marcello died, Pinastri's anger caused his spirit to unintentionally turn into an umbra, an invisible specter that fed on Pinastri's blood every night and that could only be stopped by her forgiveness. As her anger was generated from what he did to Blaze, his form took on that of a horse.
If the knight is forgiven: finally forgiven for what he did, Marcello's spirit could finally rest, not bothering Pinastri anymore.
If the knight was not forgiven: he was doomed to continue as an umbra every night, as Pinastri refused to forgive him.
