Junod of Belhaven was a witcher from the School of the Bear active in the first half of the 13th century. He was killed in the Owl Eye Grottos beneath the Tufo vineyard in Toussaint while trying to fulfill a contract.

Biography[]

Becoming a witcher[]

Though the origins of Junod were uncertain, he was reputed to be the fruit of an unusual love between a dwarf and a giantess. He eventually ended up a learner of the Bear School, studying and training at Haern Caduch. There, Junod became acquainted with, among others, Ivo from Belhaven. When it came to choosing a sobriquet, Junod chose "of Belhaven" just like Ivo, despite the fact that Junod didn't come from the town.

At one point, Junod met Ivo on the Path and the latter confronted him on the sobriquet. Junod candidly replied that he just liked the ring of it and as he didn't expect his smaller colleague to live longer, he had no qualms to appropriate Ivo's sobriquet.[2]

Quest for the Grandmaster Gear[]

In 1243, Junod had searched out the grandmaster smith Tyen'sail as he wanted him to forge Grandmaster Ursine Gear, but he had gambled away all his money so he needed work. On May 17th, he accepted a contract from Charité Gontran de Tufo and took the retainer in florens. The next day he concluded that the problems were caused by a subterranean monster and so he decided to venture inside the caves the following day.

As he made his way through the caves he drew the Bear School emblems on the walls to point the way out and wrote a warning for anyone else to not follow him. However, he was ill-prepared due to his lack of knowledge of the monsters and regretted that he ever accepted the contract. He ended up trying to fight against the shaelmaar, but he was killed and thus no one ever saw him again.[1]

Legacy[]

A few years after their encounter, Ivo learned of Junod's fate but didn't pity him.[2] When Geralt of Rivia of the Wolf School stayed in Toussaint during 1275, he collected the diagrams Junod left behind and succeeded in slaying the Bear's last foe.[1]

I remember the bear head medallion that hung from his neck, I remember a towering witcher who haggled like a fishwife.

- Lazare Lafargue's impression of Junod, Blood and Wine expansion

As big as a mountain, Junod sported a beard that would put a dwarf elder to shame. His appearence therefore fitted all the stereotypes people had about the Bear witchers. Not being one to hide his thoughts, Junod spoke with refreshing candor.[2]

Footnotes[]

  1. Rumored to be a son of a dwarf and a giantess.
