Dagread was the king of Kaedwen in 1165 and allowed Tetra Gilcrest to lead the sacking of Kaer Morhen.

Biography[]

Dagread didn't much care for governing and politics, and thus spent more time caring about his appearance than his people. In turn, he relied heavily on a group of advisors, like Tetra and Illyana Zerbst, to keep him informed so he could decide on an action and then be done with it.[1]

In 1165, Tetra pushed hard for them to raze Kaer Morhen to the ground by bringing up Sugo, a child that Vesemir had left alone on the roads after killing a leshen in the area that had just killed Sugo's nobleman father. However, without any evidence of wrongdoing other than Tetra's suspicions that the witchers were behind the odd monster attacks, and other court advisors like Illyana speaking out against Tetra's accusations, Dagread waved it off and refused to attack the keep.

Shortly after, Vesemir and his fellow witcher Luka were imprisoned when a bar fight broke out between them and some knights, resulting in the knights' deaths. Tetra once more tried to use this to get Dagread to go after the witchers but Illyana pointed out to the court and king that witnesses had confirmed the knights had instigated the fight and the witchers only acted out in self defense. Dagread then decided he wouldn't kill the witchers but instead have Vesemir earn their freedom by investigating the strange monster attacks in the forests just outside Ard Carraigh along with Tetra, while Luka remained behind as collateral.

A few days later, Tetra returned to the court alone and informed the king of her discovery: the witchers had been creating the new monsters and thus responsible for the attacks, conveniently leaving out that only their leader, Deglan, and some of their mages were actually aware of the experiments. Dagread then allowed Tetra to lead a mob to attack Kaer Morhen. Illyana showed up soon after to try and reason with Dagread but it fell on deaf ears and he summarily had Luka executed right there in the throne room.
