A crystal ball, or glass ball, is a magical item (amulet) used for communication. Unlike a megascope, it can be used only to contact with another adjusted ball. Crystal balls are used in dwarven banks to communicate between branches and the central office.
Sometimes the ball can be used to form a part of the larger construction, like the empathic probe.
