21 February AB meetup
“Meet the W3C AB” type of event, organised by Georg Rehm of the W3C Germany/Austria Office.
- location: Smart Data Forum, Mittelstraße 51-53, 10117 Berlin (map)
- time: 6-8pm
- see the invitation
- duration: ca. 2.0 or 2.5 hours of shorter presentations and discussions with Jeff and those members of the AB who would like to participate (informal and relaxed meetup-like style).
The idea would be to invite the AB members to present, in ca. 10-15 mins each, the relationship between W3C, W3C standards, W3C technologies and their respective organisation; our hope is that names like Google, Microsoft, Yandex, Alibaba etc. will attract a sizeable group of people; target audience: developers and decision makers; the event would end in the early evening with drinks and finger food.
Meeting Site Details
Yandex Technology GmbH is hosting (see map).
The building is also the Radisson hotel. It is on the other side of the river from the Dom Kirche / Cathedral, and near various interesting things.
Flights / Travel to from Meeting Site
Berlin Tegel (TXL) airport is efficient. A taxi into central Berlin is usually fast and not expensive.
Once in Berlin, there is a dense and efficient public transit system (U-Bahn, S-Bahn, buses, trams, etc.)
Housing
The building is also the Radisson hotel.
Tips from Dave: Alexander Plaza <https://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g187323-d202460-Reviews-Hotel_Alexander_Plaza_Berlin-Berlin.html>, which is bookable on booking.com, hotels.com and I am sure other sites. I wouldn’t go much further north of Karl Liebnitz Strasse than this; the area becomes quite bohemian and mixed.
The Park Inn on AlexanderPlatz is within walking distance as well. Across the river (going west towards Unter den Linden) is mostly museums and government buildings, though I stayed once (on a discount) at the Hilton, which is lovely; but this is maybe a little far to walk, especially in winter, and the U-Bahn doesn’t give a direct connection.
I have stayed in hotels the other end of the Tiergarten, in former west berlin, but I doubt you need to be that far away.
Overall, the Berlin public transit is excellent, but you might prefer to be close by, within walking distance.
