Description

Wooden Nickel is a frontier adventure set in the great, remorseless Old West.

You arrive by train on your way elsewhere, a week’s aimless wait ahead of you in a tiny, hard-luck town. As you while away the time, you begin to find yourself increasingly drawn into the curiosities of the local newspaper and, through it, the people of this land of dust and ambition.

Background

Wooden Nickel is the third game from married duo Brain&Brain, best known for folktale adventure Burly Men at Sea. The game began pre-production in 2017.

A Steam demo was released for a 48-hour period in late 2019, as part of The Game Festival.

In early 2020, Brain&Brain halted Wooden Nickel’s development and made the demo available for free.

Features

  • Embrace curiosity. Step inside the articles and advertisements of a colorful Old West newspaper that responds to your part in its story.
  • Make connections. Uncover an increasingly interconnected set of mysteries, absurdities, and unexpected friendships—or hostilities.
  • Come back soon. A week passes quickly, it turns out. As your train pulls away, you can’t help but wonder what other paths you might’ve taken.

Brain&Brain is married duo David and Brooke Condolora: best known for folktale adventure Burly Men at Sea, which they developed during an eighteen-month stint as nomads. They’ve since continued to create games and other work, managed by their indomitable cairn terrier, Oliver Doggins, who inspired their first game and accompanies them on all dog-friendly escapades.
