Metroid is an exploration-based platformer franchise made by Nintendo. The first game was released in 1986 for the Nintendo Entertainment System. The franchise follows bounty hunter Samus Aran as she travels across the galaxy to prevent space pirates from harnessing the power of the Metroid creatures. It has a first-person adventure sub-series called Metroid Prime. As of March 2023, the Metroid franchise has sold over 21.45 million copies worldwide.

- The first Metroid is the only title to sell over 1 million in Japan.
- Metroid Prime: Trilogy did not release in Japan because the ports of Metroid Prime and Metroid Prime 2: Echoes were released as standalone games as part of the New Play Control! series in that region. For this reason, the sales of the New Play Control! versions are combined with the total sales of Metroid Prime: Trilogy.
