Metroid is an exploration-based platformer franchise made by Nintendo. The first game was released in 1986 for the Nintendo Entertainment System. The franchise follows bounty hunter Samus Aran as she travels across the galaxy to prevent space pirates from harnessing the power of the Metroid creatures. It has a first-person adventure sub-series called Metroid Prime. As of March 2023, the Metroid franchise has sold over 21.45 million copies worldwide.
