    For CFOs, the first 90 days in a new role is a crucial window of opportunity for them to assess the challenges, set out a plan of action and establish their reputation.    And if you want to be regarded as a leader who creates value then this is the time to start signalling your intent to both the Board and business:    ➡️Build relationships – not just with the Board, exec team and your team but also with as many other stakeholders as possible.     The longer the interview process the less likely you’ll get the candidate you want. Hiring managers put so much time and energy into hiring – so it’s a massive shame when it falls apart not because of the opportunity or company, but just due to time. And it’s happening so much more often now - having spent well over 10 years in finance recruitment I’ve never seen the candidate market move as fast as it does now. An incredibly competitive market and online interviewing have speeded things up so there’s little room for delay. The best finance talent is in high demand. In addition, overly long hiring times can undermine people’s opinion of a business – so even if you’re not competing against another offer, a negative experience for the applicant can lead to rejection. Sometimes delays can’t be helped but here’s a few things you can do to try and avoid the process stalling: ✅ Plan the process in advance: Decide on how many interview stages there will be and who will be involved (and check their availability). ✅ Prepare for problems: Have a backup list of interviewers in case people aren’t available on the day, to avoid having to rearrange meetings. ✅ Maintain flexibility: Consider advancing a good candidate through the stages so that you can maintain momentum (rather than waiting to arrange 2nd interviews until you’ve seen everyone at 1st stage). ✅ Keep communicating!: If there’s a delay, keep the candidate updated so you manage their expectations, and they can manage other processes they’re involved in.
