Shared the first draft of proposed text for an Indieweb.org homepage update, talked through my reasoning and key changes.
Discussed how we could include more faces of people on the homepage, as I shared a couple possible ideas. Technically speaking, someone could probably figure out a way to pull in avatars that people have already added to the website, or the image from people’s h-cards — potentially springing off of the existing bot that updates event listings on the homepage (by Sven?). Sounded like it would be theoretically possible to, say, randomly choose ten images to display. (Some sample webpages in the etherpad.)
It’d also be nice to feature a handful of curated “testimonials” with quotes or (as Jacob suggested) explanations of cool stuff they’re doing and links to web (or wiki) pages. A portfolio, if you would, of IndieWeb websites/implementations and variety of people using the Indie Web for different functions and purposes.
Also discussed how videos could be embedded in pages – I’m thinking maybe a few key videos might be worthwhile to embed on specific pages. But sounds like it might take updating the wiki software, which is a pain, and installing a plugin to embed archive.org videos?
Because I love to make more projects to myself, I also brought up the thought I had this week that some key pages could use some TLC to clean out some cruft, especially the Getting Started page. Someone else mentioned the Webmention page as being highly technical when another page offered a quick-start solution. I’m wondering if some of what I’ve written for the first draft homepage might be better suited to dressing up the Getting Started page.
Someone from Australia showed how they had reskinned their homepage to look more like a website. I think adding some additional nav at the top of the homepage, say to an “about” page and a “start here” page, would be really beneficial.
