THE DARK HIVE (Demo)

Description
THE DARK HIVE: A custom campaign by cuni
(A somewhat prequel to the events of the main game)

!!! KEEP IN MIND !!!
This is an unfinished campaign, I just decided to release a "demo" or "beta" or whatever you wanna call it of what I have so far,
since I haven't worked on it in a while due to motivation issues and I want to make this public before I never do it.
I hope it lives up to The Hive, again it's unfinished meaning there are alot of unfinished areas, levels, etc.
Anything can change in the finished version.

Description:
This is a campaign where you follow the Dark Carrion through it's escape and the many places it visited and finally to where it's journey ended.
This isn't official canon for the game but my interpretation of it. You may go through a few places you have seen before, but with new content awaiting.

The campaign makes use of custom textures, sounds, objects, etc. to spice things up and make it feel like a fresh experience again,
to stand out from all the other levels/campaigns.

Have fun and enjoy!

Good point, I was just saying that because of the abilities, like Xipphorrea.

but its too easy with more health, the whole point I keep the player at 5 hp max is to make it at least somewhat challenging. but if you know what you're doing even this is still easy

This was a pretty challenging and fun version of carrion to play! One suggestion is adding the different sizes though I know this is unfinished, but I feel like only having a max of 5 health could be annoying when you have to fight 4 Dreadnaughts and 2 soldiers. The color pallet is very unique especially when it comes to the soldiers. This is one of the best maps I have ever seen, and the things you make in general are very good. =]:relithscience:

In my opinion, your maps, including this one, are the best ones on this game, even if unfinished. And while I understand that this one is more than likely unsalvageable, do you plan on making any other maps for Carrion? If not, no worries.

To be fair this is an unfinished, very-early version of what it was gonna be, I already changed it a lot and added much more after uploading the demo but lost that version and with that the complete project file.
Obviously a lot of things like this I eventually would've noticed either myself or through other people who I pick for playtesting. And it's not easy to make the game difficult without making it boring, the enemy variety is very small so that is almost unavoidable.
Though I appreciate your feedback, and the research lab is probably from there being more containment units/upgrades placed in that level that are not accessible in the demo or you didn't go back to it after acquiring the web ability, as I believe there is a tooltip trigger telling you when you reached the end of the content for the campaign.

P.S. The research lab shows up as 83% complete with one biomass sample missing, but I can't find anything. Am I being stupid and somehow locked myself out of it, or is that part just not finished?

I get that this was intentional to make a more challenging experience than the base game, but sadly, it also lacks the satisfaction that vanilla offers where the level design allows for varies approaches, letting you decide how to proceed and still feel unstoppable no matter what you end up doing.
Finally, I have to say, I do think your placing of save spots is weird. Specifically the way you tend to place the final node after the final encounter of the level. I guess you consider these nodes to be objectives, but I do think there should be some more encounters/puzzles between activating the last node and reaching the door. That's why they're save points, after all. But I admit that this is personal preference.

I hope you do not think I'm being a hater here. I really enjoyed this campaign for the most part and it's precisely because it shows so much promise that I'm being thorough with my criticism. I can't wait to play the final version once it's done.

While I like the idea of making a more challenging campaign (the base game is still very much intended to be a power fantasy to some extent) I have to admit that some parts of this mod were very frustrating. Running into enemies on every screen does at some point become more tedious than fun, especially the thankfully few parts where you go to an area and immediately find yourself spotted with no cover.
Speaking of cover, the level design does sadly contribute to the frustration, forcing you to attack from a single angle with many enemies immediately spotting you. It basically makes the encounters always come down to either one of two options:
1) try to be stealthy and pick off enemies one by one when they eventually (after long waiting) come close to your spot. Usually you still have to take some hits anyways.
or 2) just grab a grate or corpse and blindly rush into the mob of enemies and knock them out. Not very strategic or engaging.

Bruh, why does steam only tell you about the character limit once you try to post?
