ABOUT Roguelike

Yet Another Stupid Death...

The original roguelike group for fans and developers of the roguelike genre to talk, collaborate, share and highlight rogueish games and those related to them.

Rogue is the ground-breaking dungeon crawling computer game from the 1980s that featured permadeath, random dungeons, random items, random monsters, one "simple" objective and an unlimited number of random ways to die trying to achieve it.

Rogue and classic roguelike games continue to inspire developers and challenge players with modern roguelikes and the newer roguelite or roguelike-like games we see today.

Disclaimer: We welcome the chance to test and play games (both old and new, roguelike or roguelite) and to highlight both established and indie developers. Submitting games through the Curator Connect program will guarantee a fair review but not necessarily a rave one.

Vampire Survivors now has multiplayer :eng:

With this said, online cooperative gameplay by itself isn't enough to necessarily be what can make a game distinct. Recently my and Cornish played a game called Reaper Survivors (let's play video dropping in a few days). It was basically Vampire Survivors with very poor gameplay - that could be played together. Back in the day I also helped to kickstart a game called Hive Jump. They never really got the multiplayer working properly on that game, but even still it really just would just be something to pick up for a night with friends, play it that night, and then move on to the next.

Really what makes a good roguelite is doing something totally unique or novel. Vampire Survivors is single player and its concept is dirt simple, but it is captivating. Slay the Spire was special when it first came out. NEO Scavenger is a survival roguelike with a lot of interesting ideas - that could certainly be fleshed out should someone copy it. Much like with traditional roguelikes, the ones that stand out are the ones that are doing something distinct.

With that in mind please feel free to recommend any to me that have both these features

Hi guys. My 50 cents.
After dipping in and out of many rogue-lites over many years.
IMO what makes the best ones. Online/Local Co-op and Permanent upgrades.
As most of them are built for you to one shot and die, multiplayer and permanent upgrades add a lot more fun and replayability.
Unfortunately I feel like multiplayer is often overlooked.
Games that got this right include Returnal.
Thoughts?

@Daniel Alexander: If you are a developer or publisher, you can send a key or access code to our group via Curator, and Cornishknight (who is one of our reviewers) can get it through there. Otherwise, I'll drop him a note and let him know you're trying to get in touch with him.
