The Desert Island

Power Sherlock Amazing release from my pal Said. Merging Arabic sounds and rhythms into a selection of tunes that are as much at home in your ears when staring at the sea, as they are having a boogie. No reason you can't do both at the same time. Hard to choose but Dancehall does for me most, because it's so slinky. Play loud and try not to dance (you won't). Also check that artwork by Valentina 🤯 xx Favorite track: Dancehall Daraweesh.

sparky82 Absolutely mega EP. Essential heat for those partial to their beats. This is a magic carpet ride through an Arabian version of Tron. Can see Luke Una buzing off this. Favorite track: Hakawati.

about

Welcome to the world of Sadeedo’s Desert Island. Using his trusty MPC and a crew of talented musician friends he has created what feels like a new beats soundscape shaped by his distinctively sunny, soulful and wildly diverse DJ style and his own roots. So what we have here is something fresh, full of character, panache, talent and a raw style and vibe that we’re really excited about.

'Pretty sick. Somewhere between Wall of Sound records and Cornelius! I like Hakawati & Sufi Swing..good vibes'
- GILLES PETERSON

'Mega release! Love how he blends these sounds without falling in to lame 'world beats' territory - RUF DUG

'A wonderful ride through the bazaars and deserts of his imagination. Love it' - MARK BROADBENT (THE BROTHERS GRIM)

'Hakawati has a nice little jig to the groove..Duuble apple is perfect for summer chill vibes, love the bass - DJ EASE (NIGHTMARES ON WAX)

'Loving it! Sufi Swing my fave, so groovy.' - DJ PLEAD

'LOVE the music…mega!! Will support' - ROB DA BANK

Sadeedo says:
“I had no idea what direction this EP would take until I made the first song 'Hakawati'. Once I finished that, it just made perfect sense to explore and have fun with hypnotic desert sounds and rhythms. Throw in the influence of London bass music, the exotica vibes of Eden Ahbez...and you've escaped to my desert island. We have tea and a fire, plus a camel. But she's not for transport, she's just chilling, so kindly give her some space.”

Sadeedo bio:

Ibiza resident Sadeedo's diverse roots have shaped his eclectic sound; sunny, soulful, funky, and tropical, with a distinct global flavour. In addition to various residencies on the island, he hosts the popular monthly show Open Sesame on OpenLab Radio and also produces his own music, with releases on DSPPR and MaAula Records. As well as featuring at Glastonbury, more recently he's been invited to support the likes of Laurent Garnier and Fatboy Slim; to soundtrack the sunset at Café Del Mar; and to play alongside Nightmares on Wax in Freddies for the opening night of the season at Pikes.

Sufi Swing
I wanted to have some fun with a 'Khaliji' style rhythm (Khalij = Arabian gulf), with classic 80s drum machine sounds. Momo Loudiyi, a Moroccan multi disciplinary artist who played guitar on this tune, found a desert melody which fit perfectly with it, and Antonio Prosper played a lovely bassline.

Dancehall Darawish
The two guitar chords that start the track immediately shouted 'Dancehall' to me. Antonio Prosper then channeled some - previously unbeknownst to him - seemingly ancestral connection to a legendary Arab Casio keyboard master and played some lovely synthtastic flute and beeps over the top.

Leather Wallets 1JD
My parents live in Amman, Jordan. Whenever I go, I make a habit of going to the downtown area of the capital 'The Balad' to record the sounds of the hustle and bustle. Last time I went, there was a guy selling leather wallets. Most of the market sellers are repeating rhythmic one liners, as they do in markets all over the world. But this one was special, as instead of saying the line, he had a speaker with a recorded loop of his voice 'Leather Wallets, 1JD'. I stood there recording the sound and I could feel a Drum N Bass rhythm. I pretty much kept the loop as it was, and it inspired the whole song.

Hakawati
Another collaboration with Fly on this one, who provides some magic with his flugel horn and guitar over the Guembri loop. I found the vocal sample serendipitously (testing the workflow of live sampling from my Soundburger into my MPC), and when I dropped it on top of the track it just fit, again, it did not need much editing! It feels like it was made for it. The person speaking sounds like a 'Hakawati', which means storyteller in Arabic. There's an age-old tradition of these storytellers, which still exists today, where people go to cafes and watch these animated characters, usually brandishing long wooden sticks and smacking them on the floor for added excitement.

Dubble Apple
I was going for a reggae version of an old Arabic jazz track. But this is not that at all! It went in a very different direction...Fly played bass and keys on this one to get it going...and I was delighted to collaborate with two old friends for the other parts. Karim Sultan, a multi disciplinary artist and wonderful Oud player, and Jason Parry, also an island resident (the Isle Of Wight), who sprinkled the track with some sweet desert blues guitar. What I particularly love is that neither of them knew what the other was going to record, but both their parts fit the sound space comfortably.
