History

Sentient Weapon Observation Response Division or S.W.O.R.D. was a counterpart of S.H.I.E.L.D. founded by former USAF pilot Maria Rambeau after her encounter with the Skrulls and the Kree in 1995.[1]

The Vision[]

S.W.O.R.D. took control of the Vision's body after he was killed in the moments leading up to the "Blip". Wanda Maximoff tried to retrieve Vision's body after she had returned from the Blip five years later, but Director Tyler Hayward refused to turn it over just for her to essentially bury billions of dollars worth of Vibranium.[2]

A few days later, S.W.O.R.D. responded to an anomaly in Westview, New Jersey, when their agent Monica Rambeau, Maria's daughter, mysteriously vanished. It turned out the anomaly was being caused by Wanda Maximoff, who strangely seemed to be in control of another Vision.[1]

Once S.W.O.R.D. was able to bring the old Vision back online using Maximoff's "Hex magic", Director Hayward attempted to eliminate Maximoff and the new Vision with the memory-less Vision he now controlled. However, Maximoff's Vision within the Hex talked down Hayward's Vision and restored his memories, which caused Hayward's Vision to abandon S.W.O.R.D. and the fight. The Maximoff family and Agent Rambeau teamed up against S.W.O.R.D. after realizing his diabolical plan, which ultimately resulted in Director Hayward's arrest by the FBI.[3]

Notes

  • This is the first time that the S.W.O.R.D. acronym has stood for "Sentient Weapon Observation Response Division," as S.W.O.R.D. is primarily known as the "Sentient World Observation and Response Department" in the comics.
