Quote1 Mysterio will always be a villain, just as Spider-Man will always be a hero. It's when you start looking at the people behind the masks, that things get messy. Quote2

History

Quentin Beck (Earth-1048) from Marvel's Spider-Man (video game) 001

Drawing of Mysterio

Mysterio was one of the many villains that Peter Parker fought in his career as the masked vigilante, Spider-Man, eventually sending him to prison for a few years.[1][2]

After getting released from prison, Beck decided to retire from villainy and opened a virtual reality studio in Coney Island called the Mysterium with the help of his new business partners Betsy Schneider and Cole Wittman. He came across Miles Morales and invited him to enter the Mysterium, though skeptical about Beck’s intentions, Miles agreed to try it out, but an accident caused him to barely escape, with the Mysterium closed in the aftermath of the incident.

After studying what went wrong with his virtual reality technology, Beck learned it was infected by a virus, and that innocent people who were drawn into it remained trapped inside. Beck approached Spider-Man to rescue those trapped in his virtual reality construct while he investigated how the virus compromised his software, with Miles agreeing to help him. Beck was also at odds with Schneider and Wittman over their shared financial issues and general distrust between them.

In reality, the virus was created by Schneider and Wittman, who planned to appropriate Beck’s technology for themselves and use it to trap rich people inside the virtual reality program in exchange for a ransom. However, Beck began to feel that they were suspicious, so they captured him and forced him to wear his old Mysterio costume to frame him in case their plan went wrong. Miles later rescued Beck and exposed Schneider and Wittman as the real criminals, with Quentin later using his technology to transport himself to parts unknown and continue working on himself.[2]

Trivia

  • In Marvel's Spider-Man, Mysterio is referenced three times in Easter eggs found inside the game's collectible backpacks. One of the backpacks contains a broken piece of Mysterio's helmet, with Spider-Man stating that it gave him ideas for his eye lenses. Another backpack contains a crude fan-made comic about Spider-Man fighting Mysterio. The third reference is subtle and indirect; it's a book called Work/Balance for Idiots written by Dr. Ludwig Rinehart, with that name having been one of Mysterio's aliases in the comics.
  • In the story mission "Back to School" in Marvel's Spider-Man, during which Spider-Man searches for Dr. Isaac Delaney at a Halloween party at Empire State University, he interacts with a woman dressed as Mysterio who lures him into a mirror maze.
