Quote1 We serve the now-king of Wakanda until the now-king is among us. We will sleep when he is dead. Bast has decreed this. So it shall be. Quote2
—Iya Nehanda[src]

History

The daughter of Mamadou Fall,[3] Nehanda was the Black Panther of the 11th century.[2]

In her youth, her parents secretly had her and her sister trained in the occult arts by the mysterious Zawavari, a skill that would prove very useful later in life.[4] After her father died, it was revealed that Mamadou had an illegitimate son named Zembi, who didn't believe women were strong enough to bear the mantle of the Panther. However, Nehanda beat him in ritual combat and became the second ever queen of Wakanda at age 20.[3]

She also became the first Black Panther since Mosi to step outside her country to solve a world threat,[3] joining a team of Avengers that included the atlantean princess Gale, with whom she became romantically involved.[5][2]

With the Avengers

Another one of her teammates was the young Thor Odinson, and it is said that, once, after Odinson was injured in battle, his hammer Mjolnir flew towards her, and she wielded it against her enemies.[3]

One time, one of her servants, Adwoma, overheard Zembi's men plotting to poison Nehanda, so she stepped in during the meal to stop her from eating. After this, Zembi was banished to the Jabari-Lands, and Adwoma became the first of the Dora Milaje, the Queen's personal guard.[3]

Eventually, the Dora Milaje came to include a member from every tribe, and Nehanda found other uses for them: when she wanted venture outside the country's borders, she would used a glamour spell on one of her guards and leave her on the throne in her absence.[4]

Queen Nehanda took a few lovers during her life, but left no heir.[4] After a 50-year rule, she decided to hold a ritual combat to decide the next king, with many accepting the challenge, thinking they could beat the old queen. In the end however, the only person Nehanda laid down her weapons for was Djata. After receiving the throne, his first act as king was inviting Nehanda to his Taifa Ngao, believing her wisdom was still invaluable.[3]
