Winston A. Gould

Interim Director of Discovery Services

Winston Gould is the Head, Resource Sharing and Access for the Smithsonian Libraries and Archives. He leads the Smithsonian Libraries and Archives Resource Sharing Operations from discovery to delivery; manages Smithsonian Libraries and Archives circulation workflows, policies, and procedures; and participates in Smithsonian Libraries and Archives committees, task forces and projects.

Winston served 32 years in the United States Military. He served six years in the United States Army as a Light Weapons Infantryman and Cavalry Scout. Winston served 26 years in the United States Air Force, with his primary specialty in Nuclear Operations (Intercontinental Ballistic Missile Operations, Airborne Command Post Operations and Nuclear Command and Control). He also served in intelligence, information operations and instructor/evaluator assignments.

Winston started his library career in 2016 as an Interlibrary Loan Technician with the Marine Corps Research Library, Quantico, Virginia. He then served as the Marine Corps University Copyright Clerk. Winston graduated from San Jose State University with his Master’s in Library and Information Science, which provided the opportunity to serve as the Reference and Research Section Team Lead Librarian for two and a half years. He then moved from the Marine Corps Research Library to his current position with Smithsonian Libraries and Archives.

Winston’s interests include the study of World War I and World War II; military aviation history and current events; nuclear operations and strategic deterrence; and research services for military historians.

Winston holds a BS, Business Administration, from Baptist College at Charleston (1990), Charleston, SC; Master of Aeronautical Science, Operations and Management, from Embry- Riddle Aeronautical University (1994), Daytona Beach, FL; an MA, Military Arts and Operational Sciences, from Air Command and Staff College (2005), Maxwell AFB, AL and a Master of Library and Information Science, with an emphasis on Reference and Research Services, from San Jose State University (2019), San Jose, CA.
