Deadpool & Wolverine is bringing Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman’s iconic X-Men superhero characters into the Marvel Cinematic Universe through a bunch of multiverse mumbo jumbo. But really, the most exciting thing about it is that it’s a second chance for both these actors to star as their respective characters without succumbing to the absolute character-breaking nonsense of 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine. The latest trailer leans in hard to the pair’s on-screen reunion, and it’s more exciting than most of what Marvel’s done in a post-Endgame world.

The trailer opens with Wolverine trying to unwind at a bar when Deadpool shows up and drags him into his problems. The two’s banter is cheeky, but Wolverine is clearly going through it and not thrilled about Deadpool’s meta quips. He comes from a universe where he failed to save his world, and it “went to shit,” and he tells Deadpool that he’s not the hero he needs to help him with whatever shit he’s gotten himself into.

While we catch glimpses of some hard times for Wolverine, the rest of the trailer at least makes it seem like joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe hasn’t sanded off all the edges from the Deadpool movies. Reynolds and Jackman both are dropping R-rated swears and crude jokes. There’s an extended bit about Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige saying cocaine is “off-limits,” revealing even more fourth-wall-breaking gags on top of what’s been seen in previous trailers. I mostly tapped out of the Marvel Cinematic Universe after Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3 succinctly wrapped up the stories I still cared about, but I’ll show up to see how the studio navigates this character before getting off at the next stop again.
