We’re excited to share what one of our customers has to say about Test Observability, an exciting product from BrowserStack! 🚀 At BrowserStack, we’re passionate about solving real problems for developers, and the #QualityGate feature in Test Observability is a great example. It lets you set quality standards that every build must meet, automating your pipeline and pull requests for a smoother transition from CI to CD. Thank you Pramod for your kind words, we are glad you're finding #TestObservability so valuable! Want to learn more about Test Observability and the power of Quality Gate? Check out the details here 👉 https://bit.ly/4bWHO2b
Hi Testers and Developers, I want to share my findings and lessons from a product and idea that I have been cooking together with BrowserStack team - called "Test Observability" from quite some time now. I believe, I have never endorsed a paid product before but they are onto something special and I think everyone in testing field, at least, deserves to know about their awesome solution. So here I go :). For context, current process of relying on test runs in CICD has some major flaws. Namely: 1️⃣ Test runs are fragile. - i.e. even if 1 test fails among 500 tests in a run, your whole "Test run" would fail, no matter if the issue was already known and acceptable to the team from before. 2️⃣ When tests fail, (and before you can find time to fix them or the app), you typically are left with two choices . - i.e. You either disable the tests (mostly for flaky tests/app) - or mark them as expected to fail (when app errors are repeatable). In the first case, "when you disable the test", if the e2e test was checking 10 things and if it was failing at step 8, now you potentially miss getting feedback on the first 7 steps too. What a bummer! In the second case, "when you mark it as test.fail", you still run the test, and as long as it continues to fail at step 8, all is good. But if it now starts failing at step 3, the test will still be marked as passed - which is dangerous because now its giving a false negative and hiding potential issues - which is bad! Now we had to rely on these solutions in past, because there were no better alternatives available. Or at least, I never heard of any before. And this is where BrowserStacks new solution come into picture. Using BrowserStack quality gate API, you dont need to rely on the "test case run status" anymore but can target something more fundamental - which is "errors". For example, in the quality gate API, I set two rules: 1️⃣ Do we have any new errors that we have never seen before? 2️⃣ Do we have any existing and known blocking issues from the tests that we have run in this test run? If the answer to any of these two Q's is yes, API will fail the build. If not, API will pass the build. Now while reviewing errors, you can tag each of the errors as per their root cause and can create/link Jira tickets to them. From the next run, your quality gate will pass, as long as there are no "blockers" or "new issues" in the run and you dont have to either disable or mark tests as test.fail. This, in my humble opinion, is a game changer! In this process, team sees all the issues, and they decide which issues they decide to live-with and which they dont (blockers). This is typically also exactly how, most teams deal with existing reported bugs. And as you can see this is a much robust feedback cycle, then before :). I will stop here and let the idea sink in. If the idea excites you as much as it did to me, go for their product. If not, then too, happy testing :).
