Since 2014, Hatch has supported more than 7,800 founders from across the UK through our community events, mentoring and support programmes. Of that number, more than 1,350 founders were supported through our longer term Hackathon, Launchpad, Incubator and Accelerator cohort programmes alone.

Since pivoting to delivering our support to founders online in early 2020, we’re increasingly supporting people from across the UK, having previously focussed on founders in London and the South East. Now more than one in three founders (35%) supported through our cohort programmes are based outside of London, from richly diverse communities across the UK, all the way from Bognor Regis to Edinburgh.

Over the course of 2022-23, we supported 1,120 founders through our cohort and community programmes, with:

84%

Eight in 10 founders on our cohort programmes being women or from a marginalised gender.

64%

Two thirds on our cohort programmes from an ethnic minority background.

120+

More than 120 founders receiving tailored advice through peer mentoring and one on one skilled volunteering.

In 2022–23, doing more for underrepresented founders meant not just new support programmes in the form of Deep Dives, but also being able to offer financial support through the launch of the Hatch Fund. We supported a record 283 founders from across the UK through 18 Launchpads, Incubators, Accelerators and Deep Dives, exceeding our target of 257 from the start of the financial year. These longer term support programmes offered guidance and advice to the full spectrum of founders – those who were early in their entrepreneurial journeys through to founders with more established businesses looking to scale up their reach and impact.

How our cohort programmes make a difference to UK founders

We supported 283 UK founders through our cohort programme over the last financial year and we asked them about the areas of knowledge and expertise they felt had seen the biggest improvements before and after completing a Hatch programme. Among the biggest changes were:

66%

The founder felt better able to access the funding they need, up 66%.

62%

The founder felt they were more capable of measuring the impact of their business, up by 62%

47%

Having the skills and knowledge to measure and communicate their organisation’s impact, an increase of 47%.

I walked in with an idea and left with a deck about what my business is, who my audience is, how it makes money. I still look at it in awe.

How our community programme makes a difference to UK founders

Hatch supported more than 800 founders through the community programme in 2022-23, which includes one on one consultations and mentoring, networking events, panel discussions, talks masterclasses and pitch practice days. This wraparound of support means regardless of a founder’s stage of business, founders can come to the community team for a broad range of support for both themselves and their businesses.

What ultimately attracted me to Hatch was its willingness to work with founders at the earliest stage in their journey.

Our work in the entrepreneurial ecosystem

In addition to offering opportunities for Hatch’s partner organisations like the YUM! Foundation, BlackRock, UBS, and NatWest to engage in skilled volunteering and come face to face with the founders we support, we along with several Hatch graduates, spent the day at parliament in October 2022 for the launch of a powerful new report by partner Youth Business International (YBI). Having contributed to and supported the launch of Tomorrow’s Entrepreneurs, Hatch’s founders shared their insight and experiences of what being a young founder means to MPs and members of the APPG for Entrepreneurship at the House of Lords.

The report itself highlights the huge potential for young entrepreneurs to do more good through social enterprises, and makes recommendations that will help promote, support and encourage young founders to take the entrepreneurial leap. View the full report here.

In total 91 volunteers gave up their time as mentors and coaches in 2022–23.

Volunteering is not only a way for our colleagues to try to use their experience and skills to benefit others, but it is also a way to learn about the barriers and challenges facing different communities.
