Are the 302 redirects on PDP page an SEO antipatern?

When landing to a PDP without configured query parameters (no preselected variant), then Hydrogen handles a 302 redirect to the same URL with variant query parameters.

Question: What is the impact on SEO in this case? Is this a bug that should be fixed?

The redirect is fine, because the page also includes a canonical URL with the query params stripped off (default if using the getSeoMeta utility). Notice that google is properly indexing the non-parameterized version.

Thank you for the response @blittle! This makes sense, had missed the implementation of getSeoMeta utility.

Something to improve: Just noticed in the Demo Store that the canonical link from getSeoMeta is not updated on path change. Other fields such as title and description are updated

Appreciate you addressing this question @blittle. An SEO audit pointed out a potential "canonical loop" issue that could be hurting our SEO. We understand the canonical URL strips off query parameters, but could the redirect still be causing this problem?

I don't think this is a problem, as you can see from above that Google is indexing the page. You are free to update your implementation to do it differently. Regardless, we'll probably update this logic in the near future purely for the performance improvement without having a redirect.
