Victor is also a talented coder and trilingual, making him an invaluable asset to our team. 🌱 At Kanop, Victor's missions include supporting clients with establishing dynamic baselines for Afforestation, Reforestation, and Revegetation (ARR) projects under the Verra methodology VM0047, developing robust biodiversity indicators, assessing land cover, and running projections. 📊 Victor’s passion for protecting and studying nature has been a big part of who he is since he was a kid, exploring forests in the French countryside near his grandfather’s farm. We are incredibly fortunate to have Victor on our team!

The European Space Agency - ESA has agreed to fund the development of the first truly scalable biodiversity monitoring tool. And we at Kanop have the honor of being selected to build it! Understanding organic biomass is very important to assessing climate impact, but it is not the whole picture. This tool will have the capacity to combine satellite imagery with data collected on the ground to produce habitat maps and metrics on floral diversity, such as species abundance, evenness, and richness. We are seeing an increasing demand for this capability, not only with stakeholders of nature-based projects, but also with companies that are looking to align with nature/climate frameworks and regulations (TNFD, ESRS, SBTN, CDP, etc.). 🌱 Important update for ARR project developers 🌱 Verra recently announced that they are inactivating all Afforestation, Reforestation, and Revegetation (ARR) modules underneath VM0007 REDD+ methodology framework (including VMD0041, VMD0043, VMD0045), meaning that any ARR activities underneath that umbrella must transition to using VM0047. VM0047 uses a dynamic baselining approach, based on the performance benchmark. This method compares project areas against similar, unprotected control areas by measuring differences in biomass growth both within and outside project boundaries. This ensures more accurate and reliable assessments of the environmental impact. At Kanop, we have developed a process to support project developers using this methodology. We’ve already helped numerous clients save time and resources, enhancing project efficiency and effectiveness. Plus, our AGB-based approach outperforms traditional indicators such as NDVI/NDFI in quantifying additionality. This May, we achieved a significant milestone by processing 30 million hectares of land, an area as vast as Italy! While this might sound like a hefty load with high emissions, we're proud to share that our operations are more environmentally friendly than you might think! 📉 Low carbon footprint Our platform runs on Google Cloud Platform, which provides detailed reports on Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions, to help us track and report our impact accurately. Our infrastructure generated only 0.4 tons of CO₂ equivalent, a figure that factors in emissions from training our models. 🌱 How we keep our emissions low 1. Green Infrastructure: We operate exclusively on “Low CO₂” data centers provided by Google Cloud Platform. 2. Efficiency by design: Our servers are only activated during processing times. In idle periods, we operate on a minimalistic framework ensuring operational lightness and reduced energy usage (powered by Go, for the experts). 3. A continuous journey: Making a business low impact is not a one time activity. We are always looking to ensure that within our offerings we minimize resource usage (RAM, CPU, GPU) and processing time. 🔍 Curious to learn more?
