Player Notes

  • Not slated to play Thursday
Stroud is not in line to play in Thursday's Hall of Fame Game against the Bears, Cole Thompson of the USA Today reports.

Advice: With the Texans not planning to play key starters in their preseason opener, Stroud's next chance to see exhibition action will be Aug. 9 against the Steelers. While Thursday's starter hasn't been specified, the report notes that Davis Mills has been getting almost all the reps with Houston's second-team offense. Rotowire.com 7 minutes ago

  • Inks deal with Miami
The Dolphins signed Snead on Wednesday.

Advice: Snead, a nine-year NFL veteran who's spent the majority of his career with the Ravens and Saints, has found a new home in Miami. He played just 70 total snaps in four regular-season games with the 49ers in 2023, so he'll likely be competing for a depth role in the Dolphins' wide receiver room as the preseason progresses. • Dropped by Carolina
The Panthers waived Davis (thigh) with an injury designation Wednesday, Mike Kaye of The Charlotte Observer reports.

Advice: Davis was picked up by the Panthers in June after impressing with a 41-446-5 receiving line with the UFL's Memphis Showboats earlier in the spring, but Carolina has now decided to part ways with the 25-year-old. If Davis clears waiver, he could revert to the Panthers' injured reserve and miss all of 2024 unless the two parties agree to an injury settlement. Rotowire.com 17 minutes ago

  • Inks deal with Carolina
The Panthers signed Johnson on Wednesday, Mike Kaye of The Charlotte Observer reports.

Advice: The Washington product was dropped by the Titans just two days ago, but he's already found a new home in Carolina. Johnson has a shot to make the Panthers' 53-man roster, as the team's No. 3 running back spot is seemingly open. Once Johnson arrives in Carolina, he's expected to compete with Miles Sanders and Raheem Blackshear for a depth role on the Panthers' offense. Rotowire.com 26 minutes ago

  • Back at camp
Williams (shoulder) returned to individual drills during Wednesday's camp session, Alan Saunders of SteelersNow reports.

Advice: It doesn't seem as if Williams is completely health just yet, but he could be nearing a return to full participation after his individual work Wednesday. Expect the UT Martin product to fight for a depth role in the Steelers' tight end room as the preseason continues. Rotowire.com 34 minutes ago

  • Still nursing injury
Knowles (undisclosed) was spotted on the sidelines of Monday's camp session, Alec Lewis of The Athletic reports.

Advice: Knowles, an undrafted second-year wide receiver out of Kansas State, had been dealing with an undisclosed injury over the past week. It seems as if he could be nearing a return to the field, and once he does, Knowles is expected to compete for a depth spot in Minnesota's wide receiver corps. Rotowire.com 45 minutes ago

  • Returns to practice
Ford-Wheaton (shoulder) was spotted participating in Wednesday's camp session, Vincent Carchietta of The Clayton News-Daily reports.

Advice: Ford-Wheaton missed time earlier in the offseason with a shoulder issue, but it now appears that he's moved past the injury. With Ford-Wheaton back at full health, he's expected to compete for a depth role in the Giants' wide receiver room. Rotowire.com 53 minutes ago

  • Locked in with starters
Palmer has been a regular presence on the first-team offense at training camp, Daniel Popper of The Athletic reports.

Advice: Palmer, Ladd McConkey and DJ Chark reportedly are dominating WR reps on the starting offense, leaving Quentin Johnston and others to work with the backups. Palmer averaged a career-high 58.1 receiving yards per game last season, including 70.6 ypg from Week 3 onward, but a knee injury and concussion led to seven absences. After some hints of limited participation in the offseason program, Palmer seems to be back at 100 percent for training camp and is regularly catching passes from QB Justin Herbert. There's opportunity for the 2021 third-round pick to enjoy a fourth-year breakout, although he's probably looking at reduced team passing volume relative to prior years now that head coach John Harbaugh and offensive coordinator Greg Roman are running the show in Los Angeles. • Working with starters consistently
McConkey, Joshua Palmer and DJ Chark have been the main WRs in 11 personnel at Chargers training camp, Daniel Popper of The Athletic reports.

Advice: Popper notes that McConkey has "flashed" throughout spring and summer practices and looks particularly good while working from the slot. He isn't necessarily a slot-only prospect given his 4.39 speed, but it makes sense that McConkey would get a lot of snaps inside if he's mostly on the field at the same time as the 6-foot-3 Chark and 6-foot-1 Palmer. The ideal scenario for rookie-year fantasy value would feature McConkey taking most of his 11 personnel snaps from the slot while also getting steady playing time in two-wide formations. In any case, it's a good sign that the 34th overall pick has been thrown right in with the first-team offense rather than forced to work his way up the depth chart. Rotowire.com Today, 12:27 pm
